    This paint doesn’t last long.

Bought this to use on some aluminum motorcycle rims. This clearcoat already started cracking a few months after being applied. The wheels were never used, just had been sitting in the garage. This stuff is not good.

No, I do not recommend this product.

A: Lasts a lot longer with primer but you get a year or so out of it without on a surface that has been cleaned reasonably well.

Q: Does this paint have to be cured by heat?  We need a satin black heat temperature paint for a newly made metal fireplace surround, which looks like a picture frame on the wall surrounding a two-way fireplace that is built into the wall.  Thank you.

    1 Answer

A: The VHT caliper paint requires a heat cure of 200 degrees for twenty minutes. The inherent heat of normal break operation can also cure the paint as well. With this specific application your customer is inquiring about, the normal operation of the fireplace would gradually accomplish the curing process as well. After the product is applied we would recommend the customer wait at least 5 days for paint to dry before operating the fireplace.

Q: I purchased the "real red" caliper paint and it turned out to be a maroon looking colour. Is it naturally that dark?

    1 Answer

A: Real Red should be a standard red color. If the caliper is cast iron or a darker metal surface, this might have an effect on the shade of color being applied on top. You could try priming with the engine enamel primer SP148 which is a light grey and may lighten up the Real Red paint.

Q: High temperature cure? I am thinking of painting the calipers at the same time as I am doing the brake job. Would heat of driving be enough to cure the paint? Can I do this anytime after painting or is there some time window when the curing needs to be performed?

    1 Answer

A: Curing can be accomplished with normal brake operating temperatures or parts can be baked at 200 degrees Fahrenheit for about an hour. Typically the paint would want to air dry overnight (24hrs) before heat curing

Q: Necessary to apply primer paint? is it necessary to apply a primer before applying this paint? I've sanded my calipers and just applied this paint over it

    1 Answer

A: If you sand and create enough profile to the metal, you should be fine applying the paint directly to the surface of the caliper. However, for best coverage, adhesion, and overall finish, we do recommend the VHT flameproof primer prior to applying the VHT caliper paint.
