Works Great

I give the Thermacell Tick Control Tubes Five Stars! We have been using them for several years now and the tick population has been reduced dramatically. I went through cancer treatments and did not get the tick control tubes out on time for the year and we saw an increase in the tick population and then we put more out and deeper into the woods and the reduction was incredible. For a couple of years everyone was seeing a huge increase in ticks. Our vet even commented on how many everyone was seeing and dealing with them. If you get these Tick Control Tubes out the first of April, the end of July and if you have a long hot and dryer summer than usual, it's good to put them out again in the beginning of October. Place them 20 feet inside the woodline area every 30 feet apart and then go another 20 inside the woods and place every 30 feet for the best results. You have to get them out to kill the the ticks in the nymph stage as they are much easier to kill in that stage of their life cycle. The idea is to prevent the ticks from becoming adults. If you use them as directed and pay attention to the weather pattern you will have great success with these products. I highly recommend them.

Shockingly effective

We moved onto a beautiful piece of land that hadn’t been lived in for a long time, in the middle of a forest basically, lots of rodent problems to handle - nature had basically taken over. We couldn’t step foot outside without having multiple ticks to take off. We had to warn guests for the first two summers. Then a friend recommended Thermacell and our outdoor life was transformed. We had multiple conversations about how wild the change in tick population has been. 99% solved.

Q: How does providing cotton for mice kill ticks

3 Answers
  • A: the cotton has a pesticide on it, the mice use the cotton to build their nests with it and the ticks attach themselves to the mice and die

Q: I would like to try this at the cottage, but I know there is a family of foxes nearby who will surely eat the mice. Would using this product pose a risk to them? Owls too?

  • A: No the poison is in the cotton baton that the mice use to make a nest.

Q: So do I need mice for these to work. I work hard to elimate mice. Are you saying I need mice to control the ticks?

  • A: Hey Smitty, you are smarter than I was when I bought these. I didn’t ask that question and used 3 of these around my house last spring as my dogs were bringing ticks into the house for the first time ever. Well the ticks did go away but fast forward to August 2021 and I had mice living in my car engine filter, cabin filter and trying to get into the house. The nest they made in the car was made up of this product. This has to be the worst purchase I ever made. It cost me a lot of time and money getting the mice out of my car. Please do not make the same mistake I did.

Q: So mice take something back to their nests? Does it harm the mice or just ticks?

2 Answers
  • A: The mice take back to their nests the cotton which has a chemical in it, permethrin, It kills the ticks that are on the mouse only.  Should use twice a year. See the instructions.

Q: Will this harm the squirrels and chipmunks running around my yard?

2 Answers
  • A: I did a lot of research on this product before buying and am confident saying no harm will come to your squirrels and chipmunks. If anything, it might reduce their ticks, although they aren't likely to use the nesting materials in the tubes. This pesticide is safe for almost all mammals... EXCEPT cats. The bigger danger is to "non target" insects and arachnids. Risk to cats and non-target insects can be minimized by careful placement (i.e., put them in places where mice go, but cats/bees/butterflies don't). This will also help with their effectiveness, as they only work if the mice take the stuff in the tubes! There are instructions that come with the tubes about where to put them.

Q: So is it okay that my cat eats the mice?!?!

2 Answers
  • A: I’d double check with your vet, but the active ingredient in these (permethrin) is toxic to cats.  Would be best to keep the kitty away from the mice exposed to these.

Q: So how does this work? I need mice to take the cotton from the tubes? And then what? So the mice don’t get ticks, how does that help me?

2 Answers
  • A: Initially, nymph or larval ticks feed on mice. This is where they often get the diseases they carry, such as the bacteria that cause Lyme disease. Mice are nocturnal animals. They sleep during the day, so when you have a spray tick treatment applied to your yard, it will eliminate the adult ticks roaming among the grass and brush, but the mice are burrowed deep in the ground beyond the spray’s reach. That means the ticks that the mice are carrying remain safe and alive, ready to emerge for their next blood meal.
