Propane tanks and expiry dates

Propane exchange was seamless. The young man helping me with the propane fill checked the age of my tank exchange. Explained about expiry dates on tanks and when I would need a new one. Great info

Not a full tank

We exchanged our tank, came home attached it to our reader and it was in the yellow. I understand cold weather readings but this was a surprise. So I weighed it, full tank should weigh 37lbs, this tank weighed 30lbs. Not extreme but in today's economy, I want what I paid for. Manager was great, exchanged the tank BUT put that 30lb tank back in the cage they disburse the tanks from, not in the refill cage🤨. Which means someone else will get a partially filled tank. I will not go back to canadian tire for my next tank exchange.

Questions

1 - 9 of 9 Questions

Q: Can a tank which has just passed the 10 year limit be used for this exchange program?

4 Answers
  • A: Head over to the gas station (839 Yonge St. location), walk in to the cashier, politely ask for a trade, they will take your $33.99 plus tax, hand you a refilled new(ish) cylinder and take your empty one away. If you park at the Canadian Tire lot, make sure you retain your receipt so you are not charged for parking.

Q: I have a very old, outdated propane barbeque tank (18 yrs, maybe). Can I safely bring it in for an exchange tank? There is still propane in it, but I don't know how much. I just don't feel safe using it.

  • A: I happen to know for a fact that there's a relatively local company (to Hamilton On.) that specializes in recycling old propane tanks. They extract every last drop of propane with a vacuum pump before it's recycled like any other metal. Customer service at Canadian Tire is likely not qualified to determine if your very old tank can be legally or safely refilled but if they take it for exchange or "scrap" the tank will absolutely be safely disposed of.

Q: where is the expiry date

1 Answer
  • Tank Traders

A: The expiry date should be located on the collar of the tank. Typically, it is stamped vertically ending with the letter "E". The tank will expire 10 years after the stamped date.

A: There is no additional charge for filling a trader tank, but the employees filling the tank will have to take the sleeve off of the cylinder in order to do an inspection for safety purposes.
