Efficient propane exchange

Exchanging a Tank Traders propane tank at Canadian Tire Bracebridge is fast and efficient. It’s also reasonably priced vs other outlets such as a gas station. There is always someone ready at the lockup cage in front of the store to help with the exchange; I believe they are alerted by the store’s walkie talkies. I would always go to Canadian Tire for this need.

Good Service, But like everything, Getting Expensive!

I've used CTC's propane exchange for many years, going back to the other company. When I first started it was half as much as it is now. Service was good, and the convenience is nice, but the price is getting out of hand. Over $25 for 20 lbs of propane! You're getting the tank(s) back. I know the staff in the store don't set the prices. so never mentioned anything to them. Those that do - you're gonna lose customers. I can get a refill at a local gas station for cheaper.

Questions

Q: Can a tank which has just passed the 10 year limit be used for this exchange program?

  • A: Head over to the gas station (839 Yonge St. location), walk in to the cashier, politely ask for a trade, they will take your $33.99 plus tax, hand you a refilled new(ish) cylinder and take your empty one away. If you park at the Canadian Tire lot, make sure you retain your receipt so you are not charged for parking.

Q: I have a very old, outdated propane barbeque tank (18 yrs, maybe). Can I safely bring it in for an exchange tank? There is still propane in it, but I don't know how much. I just don't feel safe using it.

  • A: I happen to know for a fact that there's a relatively local company (to Hamilton On.) that specializes in recycling old propane tanks. They extract every last drop of propane with a vacuum pump before it's recycled like any other metal. Customer service at Canadian Tire is likely not qualified to determine if your very old tank can be legally or safely refilled but if they take it for exchange or "scrap" the tank will absolutely be safely disposed of.

Q: where is the expiry date

1 Answer
  • Tank Traders
A: The expiry date should be located on the collar of the tank. Typically, it is stamped vertically ending with the letter "E". The tank will expire 10 years after the stamped date.
