Excellent Mix meant for Orchids

I don't understand why this product has poor reviews because I've been using it for a year now with no issues. This product has helped my orchids bloom twice already, once in the winter and once in early spring. Attached you can see pictures of them in bloom between Dec 2019 and Jan 2020. Their roots are growing well in this media as it's a mix of large, med and small chunks of bark. You can always break or cut the larger bits if you want them smaller. On the package it instructs you to soak the media before use, but I advise that you also rinse this media out several times before use to prevent dust from collecting at the bottoms of your pot. On a side note: The "white bugs" that the post below mine might be talking about could be perlite. It comes to the surface when you rinse the media.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Bark and charcoal too large

I found the pieces of bark and charcoal too huge to pot up a small orchid. Also very dusty product. Would have preferred only bark and not the additional "ingredients".

No, I do not recommend this product.

Hello AlisonR,
Pro-Mix Orchid mix is a blend of Western Fir Bark, Charcoal and Perlite, which is perfectly suited for many Orchids. Orchid mixes contain a high percentage of bark chips, as that is what Orchids prefer to go on. Thank you PremierHomeGardenProducts

It almost killed my orchid

I repotted my orchid with this orchid mix and water the orchid once per week. After a while, I noticed something going wrong with the orchid. I then poured out the mix from the pot and checked the orchid roots. The roots were getting rotten. I then took a look at the bottom of the pot and noticed a lot of dirt at the bottom. This orchid mix is a combination of barks and some dirt which did not get dry easily. My orchid roots got rotten as a result. I am still using this bag of mix but have to filter it to remove the dirt and just use the bark.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Hello Violet, Pro-Mix Orchid Mix has been specifically formulated to provide orchids with good drainage and aeration, favoring excellent root development. However if the pot itself does not provide drainage and the water builds up in the pot then the roots can be affected. The amount of light and heat your plant receives will also affect how soon your needs watering. It may be that your plant is receiving too much water or too often. The best place to water your plant( in a pot with drainage), is in a sink. Use lukewarm water and water your plant for about 15 seconds and be sure to thoroughly wet the media. Then allow the plant to drain for about 15 minutes. It may appear dry but it has had enough water. After the plants are watered, they should be placed so that the pots do not stand in water. Best to set in trays or saucers of gravel. This helps to insure that the base of the pot is not immersed in water which could lead to root rot. PremierHomeGardenProducts

Big chunks mixed with small

I just repotted two Phaelenopsis orchids with this mix. Time will tell whether I did it properly, since this was the first time I have ever repotted an orchid. . The problem I had with this mix was the size of the bark. Alot of pieces were pretty big (chunks 1" and over, as well as long slivers) ) which made it difficult to get the bark inbetween the roots. I was potting my orchid into a 4" pot.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Questions

1 - 2 of 2 Questions

Q: Is this suitable for rhododendrons, camellias, and other plants that like an acid soil?

1 Answer
  • A: Pro-Mix Orchid mix is a blend of Wester Fir Bark, Charcoal and Perlite, which is perfectly suited for many Orchids. The pH for Western Fir Bark can vary from 5.2 to 6.3, and therefore this product may not be suitable for very acid loving plants.

Q: can this be used in place of tropical soil

1 Answer
  • A: We would not recommend using Pro-Mix Orchid Mix on it's own for most common tropical plants as there is not enough soil structure to maintain a healthy plant. Orchid mixes contain a high percentage of bark chips, as that is what Orchids prefer to go on. Most tropical plants will not thrive in this type of mix, but blending it in with a regular potting mix can help mimic their native tropical forest soil structure, and therefore may actually help them grow. That being said, always do a little research to determine the ideal potting mix for the variety of plant you have.
