Actually works

I bought this bulb based on reviews from others, and I have to admit, although it is a bit on the pricey side, it actually works. I am currently growing lupine, tomato and red bell pepper seedlings in my basement to get a head start on the growing season and all seedlings are thriving under these bulbs. I even have a scarlett runner bean that I started as a test and it's actually grown a lot more than I expected under the light!

Yes, I recommend this product.

Let There be Light!

I bought this bulb and put it in a cheap desk lamp. My seedlings responded to it almost immediately! Fantastic product; my little plants are looking significantly healthier after only 1 day!

Very Bright and Good Worth

I bought this light to brighten up my cubicle and get a little more Vitamin D, since it simulates the solar spectrum perfectly. Both energy efficient and super bright. I even have a plant growing! My only issue was that all Calgary stores do not seem to keep a good stock... or organized inventory. Took me 2 weeks and 4 online store purchases that claimed to have "in-stock," only to be cancelled in 1-2 days, to obtain one.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Q: Will this charge solar-powered devices?

1 Answer
  • A: OttLite CFL bulbs provide a simulated natural light that plants thrive off of, but due to their lower energy usage they are not recommended for providing power to a solar-powered device. Depending on the energy demands of the solar device, the OttLite CFL may or may not work, but it should not be used as the only source to provide energy for the solar device.

Q: Area coverage How much area does each bulb cover for growing vegetables indoors? Ex. one bulb provides enough light to cover 2 square feet of soil, or a 12 inch x 36 inch container.

1 Answer
  • A: There are a lot of variables involved, but if you keep the bulb at least 15 inches above the plant, at that height, you get about a 24” x 24” lighted area. This may change based on the fixture that is being used. One bulb should be able to provide enough light for your 12” x 36” container as long as it is positioned at a proper height above the plants.

Q: How much UV light does it release? and Can it cause eye damage?

1 Answer
  • A: The bulbs emit light in all parts of the visible spectrum. Ott-Lites have very low UVA and immeasurable UVB radiation. Natural Light Supplement or 20W plant bulb emits some UVB, which is needed for plant and animal health. A bulb with a CCT of 5000K or greater and a Cri of at least 90 (such as ours) would have a UV-A range of 320-400nm, which is very good. Extreme UV would be in the range of 121-10 nm. That said, people who are highly sensitive to UV radiation should avoid exposure to any type of fluorescent light. As for UV damage that would cause eye damage, we would not know. However, the amount of UV produced is so small that it is not considered hazardous to your health. Results of a “Health Canada” study showed that, when either CFLs or regular incandescent bulbs are used at a distance of 30 cm or more, UV emissions do not present a health risk to the general population. People should always keep a minimum distance between themselves and any light source. When CFLs or regular light bulbs are used daily at 30 cm, exposure should be limited to no longer than 3 consecutive hours. Although the amount of UV emitted by CFLs pose no problem for the average person, some people are extremely sensitive to UV and may be affected by the amount of UV produced. OttLite encourages individuals that may have light sensitivities to consult with their doctor before using an OttLite or any fluorescent type bulb.
