Didn’t perform as it should

I recently purchased the MotoMaster Eliminator Workshop Series Smart Battery Charger on CanadianTire.ca because it was not available in our local Canadian Tire store. I chose this battery charger because it indicated that it’ll charge both 6 & 12 volt batteries as well as Deep-Cycle and Conventional Starting batteries. Shortly after receiving the charger by courier I read the product manual and connected one of my 6 volt deep-cycle rv batteries and it appeared to fully charge the battery as indicated in the product manual. I proceeded to charge my second 6 volt deep-cycle rv battery and it only partially charged the battery. At that point the charger was dead and not working in any way. I thought I may have tripped a circuit breaker however this was not the case, the charger just stopped functioning as it should. I called the toll free product specialist line to be connected to a technical representative however I had to leave a voicemail message because there were no technical representatives available. I waited 3 days for someone to call me back however no one did so I decided to return the charger to my local Canadian Tire store. The local Canadian Tire customer service representative was very understanding and looked after me very efficiently by providing me with an in store credit for the entire amount of the charger. Talking with the customer service representative I learned that this particular charger has been discontinued. I wonder why??? I would not repurchase this product.

RUINED TWO OF MY CARS

ABSOLUTE TOTAL GARBAGE! It says any battery under 10V is saltfaded and will not charge them. I recently charged my 2005 Magnum and it ruined the ECM, amp, cluster module, and a couple other modules. I accepted blame for that at first, as I was trying to connect to the ECM. I just used it to charge my 2017 Challenger and I left the charger on for an hour on slow charge. It shorted out the shifter and ruined it. Now I cannot drive the car. Both of these cars had brand new batteries and the booster set to 6amp and charging through the factory charge/boost locations under the hood.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Q: Does this battery charger automatically detect what type of battery you're charging (lead acid battery (wet), maintenance-free, AGM and gel cell) or do you have to set it yourself?

3 Answers
  • A: No automatic detection you have to chose the battery type but it is clearly marked in a window on the front of the unit and as easy as pushing the selection button to choose your type of battery. Although not part of your initial question but one of the other comments I would make based on my experience and satisfaction with this unit, is that there is also a selection area for Charge RATE and there are (3) choices - 6A charge, 30A-12A Boost and 80A ENGINE START. Ideally the first one 6A is the long but thorough charge and depending how low the battery is down could take a several few hours but is the best method to get the battery reconditioned of sorts by a slow charge but of course if you have the time and not late for work. There is also a display that shows the progress in Volts or %. Again depending on how low the battery has gone, even the 30A-12A Boost may not be instantaneous and take a few minutes on the charge before working. Also make sure the cables are on tight and you should see reading of the Amps or voltage on the display. If after a minute all displays are 0 check the cables to be sure everything is working and well connected. If by example the cables are crossed or the battery is shorted there is a visible indicator light on the unit, as well if everything is charging normally also an indicator with a graphic of a battery with a lightning bolt to show things are charging. As for my overall satisfaction I am very satisfied with my purchase. For me it works well for my stubborn 2006 Honda Civic which is a Gem of a car but hates extreme Cold weather starts. We have had a number of cold days this winter 2021-2022 where I am and when needed I plug in the charger and in a few hours the car starts and the battery is reconditioned. At least until the next -25c! Good luck and I hope this has been helpful.

Q: I have the Eliminator Workshop charger plugged in and charging my battery. I pushed the button to check the alternator and it shows Lo. Is this telling me the alternator is to low to keep the charge? Please let me know. Thanks Jr...

3 Answers
  • A: The Alternator Check function cannot be used while charging your battery. Also, the engine needs to be running. To check your alternator performance, per page 14 of the instruction manual: 1. With the charger unplugged from the AC outlet, connect the charger to the battery. 2. Plug the charger AC power cord into the AC outlet. 3. Start the vehicle, rev the engine at 2000 rpm for 30 seconds and turn on the vehicle’s headlights or other accessories. 4. Set the Display mode button to Alternator %. 5. If the display gives a numeric percentage, the alternator is working properly. The percentage will be proportional to the voltage between 13.2 V and 14.6 V. If the display reads HI or LO, refer to your vehicle’s manual or have the electrical system checked by a qualified technician.

Q: So when first powered up the default battery type is displayed. Is this the most common battery type in cars etc? Or should it be switched to normal for those?

3 Answers
  • A: It's normal (flooded/wet) batteries are most common. If unsure what type of lead-acid battery you have, we suggest using the AGM mode.

Q: Can this item be used to charge golf cart 6v batteries.

3 Answers
  • A: Yes, this charge can be used to charge 6V golf cart batteries independently (or two connected in series for 12V). It cannot be used to charge them in a 36 or 48V series, for example.

Q: While charging a small AGM battery I got the message "5UL" this is not listed as a code in the manual or on the top of the charger. What does this code mean? Is there another list of codes somewhere?

  • A: It means the battery is SULphated. Probably done.

Q: Can it be used in winter under 0.00 °C? Maybe -15 °C?

  • A: yes, the cold does not really affect the charger . you need to to protect it from the snow and the cables are not as flexable the colder it gets

Q: I was considering buying this charger, and read the owner's manual. It says the default battery setting is AGM not "Standard". Is this true? Most batteries are the standard lead acid wet/flooded type.

3 Answers
  • A: The default Battery Type 'logic' between both chargers is the same - they both default to AGM battery type as this is the less aggressive charge voltage. The default Charge Current (amps) 'logic' is different between the two products because they have very different options/specifications.

Q: will it charge a marine lithium battery

2 Answers
  • A: The answer is yes. You can use this charger in a PINCH. It will charge your battery. However, Lithium batteries are very specific about the specs of charging. Bit of a pain but, to get the most longevity out of lithium batteries, you should use a lithium battery charger. Lithium is great but you do have to be committed to their maintenance. I have around a dozen big power lithium batteries. I always use the recommended chargers.

Q: i just bought this charger and in Boost charge with a normal car battery the output is 16.1V... is this charger defective? Anyone see an output this high?

2 Answers
  • A: Mine is the same. For a boost charge the voltage is intentionally higher to push current into the depleted battery. If this was 16 volts on the normal charging setting, that’s likely a problem.
