Good...could have been great!

A work light that can be hung over the hood of a car for automotive use. This was a tool that I have been looking at getting for a long time for my garage being a big DIYer. Many comparable lights from other brands don't even come close to the price of this unit when on sale. I quickly snapped one up the day it went on sale and began using it for a project on my car. During that time I found a few shortcomings that brought my interest in this tool down a bit. 1) The first being the lack of changing the beam direction. This light can be used for clamping onto an assortment of objects to provide illumination, but its main selling point is to clamp onto the hood of a vehicle. It does this well, having two large padded holders that extend out far enough even for large trucks. Its when you start getting to work that you soon realize you can't control where the beam is pointing (please see attached pics). Pretty much the light beam will shine in the direction of what angle your hood is opened at. In my case my cars hood opens up pretty wide so the light regardless where it was placed would shine at a 45 degree angle over the engine and into my line of sight when bending down to work on my car. I bought this to provide light over top of the engine bay. I'm not sure why CT neglected to add this feature as it would have made it ideal when comparing it to much more expensive lights that cost 2-3x the price. 2) The second shortcoming of this light is the power and charging system. The light has two light output settings. Half and Full light output. When using half the run time of the tools Lithium-Ion battery according to Motomaster is 4hrs, and when on Full it drops to 2hrs. Take into consideration that this is when the battery is at full health and is able to keep a good charge. Down the road after repeated use this will slowly drop. Now 2 hrs isn't a lot for someone like myself. It doesn't mentioned this on the box, but the tool cannot be plugged into the wall and be charged at the same time. I found this to be another let down as 2 hrs is a decent amount of time but if one needed more you would have to turn the unit off and wait several hours for it to charge. Having the ability to extend the units run time by plugging it into the wall and charging it would have been great! Like I said in the title this could have been an amazing bang for your buck underhood light. If you can look past these small issues with the tool then its a great product from Motomaster. It seems well build and sturdy for use by the average DIYer. For me though these criticisms I have after trying it out made me return it and will probably buy one of the more expensive lights out there.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Questions

1 - 1 of 1 Question

Q: Power through Wall outlet? Once the battery has run out of power can this be plugged into the wall to continue operation/ charge the unit? Or once the battery is dead it stop working and we have to wait for it to charge to use it again?

1 Answer
  • A: After the battery runs out, users should charge it again first. There is a protective system inside the light to avoid charging during operation.
