Tester overheated, smoked, and failed at 400 A

Tester overheated, smoked, and failed during use within its advertised operating range I purchased this battery load tester to test individual 12V batteries rated between **900–1000 CCA**. The test was performed on **one single battery only**, not on a bank of batteries connected in parallel. Following the manufacturer's instructions, the battery was fully charged and a load test was started. When applying approximately **400A load**, the tester began overheating after only about **8 seconds**. The overheating alarm/buzzer activated, indicating an abnormal temperature condition. After the alarm started, the situation became more concerning: the tester continued heating, and smoke started coming from inside the unit. The clamps changed color and became visibly overheated, turning red from the heat. The cable insulation near the clamps showed severe heat damage and appeared almost carbonized. This occurred while testing a single 900–1000 CCA battery, not under an excessive setup or by testing multiple batteries together. A heavy-duty battery load tester should be capable of safely performing the load test required for batteries within the specifications it claims to support. The apparent inability of the cables, clamps, and internal components to safely handle the applied load raises serious concerns about the product's design, thermal capacity, and reliability. **Conclusion: I cannot recommend this tester for testing high-capacity batteries. A product that overheats, triggers an alarm, changes clamp color, damages cable insulation, and produces smoke during a normal test procedure does not provide confidence in its safety or durability.** Rating: 1/5

No, I do not recommend this product.

Thank you for your feedback. Please note that when testing a stud post battery, you must use lead stud-to-lug adapters so that the adapter makes lead-to-lead contact (with the bottom flat portion of the battery terminal). Connecting directly to the stud itself, which is made of steel, may generate a tremendous amount of resistance, particularly under heaving loading, thus a tremendous amount of heat. Think of it this way, while the stud (and nut) is the fastening mechanism, the electrical contact of your battery cables is actually the flat, round lead patch at the base of the stud. We hope this information helps shed some light on your experience. We don't get many people testing Group 31 stud-post batteries but your example highlights an opportunity for us to add additional content to the instruction manual. Thank you.

Saved buying another new battery.

This device helped me determine there was a phantom load that was killing the battery in my snowmobile. After charging the battery and using the tester to verify the allowable 15 second drain and then storing the battery on a shelf for two weeks and doing the same test it confirmed that something intermittently was draining the battery when installed in the sled. Turns out mice had nibbled the wires and periodically that bare spost touched ground as the critters shifted the wires. Money well spent, and doubly so as it was purchased on the 50x point day.

Great carbon pile battery tester

Has worked great from the box. Clamps are sturdy and hold strong. Seems to do it's job and it was a great price.

Not very good

Purchased this on sale, tried it and it didn’t work, took it back and exchanged it for another one, same thing, did not work. Maybe it was a bad batch or maybe its just a poor product.

Questions

1 - 1 of 1 Question

Q: Can this be used for 6 volt batteries (tractor) as well?

2 Answers
  • A: This unit is designed for 12v battery; the meter and chart are all calibrated to 12V. Could you perform conversions to interpret the data for 6v? yes...but if you're needing to ask this question, you may not be comfortable performing that.
