Solid Metabo Quality

The Metabo HPT M3612DA 36V Cordless Plunge Router has been a solid addition to my home tool collection, especially for woodworking and general DIY projects where I need precision and portability without dealing with cords. As someone working out of a garage and backyard setup, the cordless feature is a big deal. Being able to grab the router, take it to wherever I’m working—whether that’s a deck, workbench, or even outside—and not worry about power outlets or extension cords has made a noticeable difference. The 36V battery provides plenty of power. I’ve used it on hardwoods like oak and maple for edge profiling, dados, and even some mortising, and it holds up well. It doesn’t feel underpowered at all, even compared to corded models I’ve used in the past. The plunge action is smooth, and the depth adjustment is easy to use once you get the hang of it. It has a fine adjustment dial that’s helpful when you’re trying to dial in precise depths, especially for things like inlay work or shallow grooves. The router comes with both 1/4" and 1/2" collets, which is great because I’ve been able to use all my existing bits without issue. It’s a bit heavier than some corded models, especially with the 36V battery attached, but the weight actually helps keep it stable during cuts. The base has a good grip on the work surface, and the soft-start motor keeps it from jerking when you power it on. The variable speed dial is easy to reach, and the speed range works well for everything from softwoods to more delicate detail work. One thing I found useful is the LED light near the bit—it does help with visibility, especially indoors or when routing in shadows. It’s not a game-changer, but it’s a thoughtful touch. There’s also a dust port, which connects to a shop vac or hose, and it works decently, though like most routers, it won’t catch everything—expect to do some cleanup afterward. As for downsides, the router’s plunge lock lever feels a bit stiff, especially when new. It loosens up with use, but it’s not as smooth as some high-end routers. Also, because it’s cordless, you’ll burn through battery quicker on bigger jobs or with larger bits—routing a lot of dados or raised panel profiles, for example. Swapping batteries helps, but you’ll need at least one spare for longer sessions. Overall, if you’re a DIYer or homeowner doing cabinetry, trim, or woodworking projects and want a router that doesn’t tie you to a cord, the M3612DA delivers. It has the power of a corded router, with the convenience of cordless use, and it’s accurate and capable enough for serious project work at home.

Tons of power and features.

It’s cordless with tons of power, and loaded with features. I’m a remodeler, often having to make custom moulding on the jobsite and this tool is amazing. You can not beat the quality of this tool at this price point.

Great addition to my router collection

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I caught this router on sale about a year ago and absolutely love it. The mobility and power make it a go to for so many tasks where I might have used another tool. All my other routers are fixed base so the plunge feature saves so much time. I made a jig specifically for this router to make dados so I don’t have to set up my table saw. I had to shave down the top rail of a gate and was able to pop on the edge guide and do it without removing the gate or dragging a cord 100’ to the location. The only negative is a minor one but when the battery isn’t on it doesn’t sit flat upside down so changing bits can be a juggling act if I’m trying to be safe.
