Not really easy to work with

I must say, I don't regret the purchase. But after working with this for 2 years repairing my car, I would like to replace it. I mainly use two ratchets: a Stanley 3/8 (I also have a Mastercraft 3/8 which I keep for spare) and this extendable Maximum ratchet. I also have a 1/2 ratchet with an extension bar for the toughest bolts. But 95% of my work I use these two 3/8 ratchets. The extendable Maximum ratchet is useful for bolts that require more torque. It works well on these bolts. However, for most bolts the Stanley ratchet is much easier in hand and to handle. This is the main issue with the Maximum adjustable, it is too big and too heavy. But there is another thing: the head does pivot (rotate) and it's locked with a pin. This causes the ratchet to have an unpleasant flexibility when I try to remove a seized bolt. I need a ratchet to be very stiff or the pressure I put on the bolt doesn't go on the right axis and the ratchet my slip off the bolt or round the head. This is particular important when working with torx/allen sockets on european vehicles. Wheat's more, the ratchet developed play in this flex joint. Also, such flex joint is rarely necessary, and when the head is flexed this way (the pin allows the head to be locked in all positions), the torque is applied with such angle that makes it useless on heavy bolts. In other words, the flex head is useless and even unproductive. Otherwise, the ratchet is solid despite it being this flexible, but I only use it when needed, I don't enjoy using it.

No, I do not recommend this product.

    Excellent versatile ratchet

So I purchased this ratchet in a set to use on removing nuts and bolts in tight, hard to reach areas. Unfortunately it turns out I need to do a timing belt on an old car which required loosening an alternator pivoting bolt to take off the accessory belt. Using a regular socket and combination wrench, I wasn't able to get to the bolt which was located underneath the alternator pulley and slightly out of view from looking at the top. So with this rachet having a flexible head, I was able to put a socket on the bolt with one hand and extended the handle bar with the other to increase leverage to break the bolt loose. It took some force as the bolt was on pretty tight, but it worked great. It felt almost like a ratchet, breaker bar, and an offset wrench all in one handy tool.

    Yes, I recommend this product.

    very handy

Very Handy when you need a little bit of leverage at the beginning. I was using a pipe before but that is awkward in tight spaces.

    Yes, I recommend this product.

Q: Is this 1/2" drive? Is this a 1/2" drive? What torque is it rated for?

    • A: No this is a 3/8 ratchet. It’s nearly as big as a ½ inch one but it’s only designed for 3/8 drives. Not sure how much toque it can handle, but I just treat it the same as my other 3/8 ratchets

Q: What kind of steel? I am curious what kind of steel this is. There is currently an identical ratchet made from chrome vandium available from the competition for only $10 more. I know tool quality steel is fairly generic but i'm curious if its really that big of a deal

    1 Answer
    • A: The product is manufactured using a high quality Chrome Vanadium steel.
