Bonding plastic to metal

This product has worked well to bond a plastic HRV flap to a metal motor shaft. The motor sounds slowly, but has high torque. Shoe goo and a hot glue gun failed in one day, but this product is still holding after a week.

Plastic Bonder Does what?

I have used many plastic “epoxies”. Plastic Bonder - Said set up in 15 minutes, not quite, more like over 30 minutes. And ready for sanding in minutes no way! Still tacky after 3 hours. Says fills gaps…? Yes if the gap is a few thousandths of an inch. This is a typical epoxy, thin without substance. Its plastic bonding ability has little to do with chemical bonding. It’s just a tacky epoxy w/o special plastic capabilities, did not work well on my repair., it is basic stuff. Very disappointing.. Yes I followed directions.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Q: Does this really dry black, as stated in the description? Wondering why it would be labelled "tan". Also, is this a urethane adhesive? What's the difference between this and the black "JB Weld Plastic Bonder", which has a very different description

  • A: No it dries a tan colour. They just used the same description for both products. I was wondering the same thing.

Q: Has anyone tried this Plastic Bonder on a plastic fuel tank? I’ve tried the original JB weld and it worked for about 4-5 weeks then it started to leak again.

  • A: I have been in this type of work for over 30 years and I have yet to find a product that will hold up for a repair on a plastic gas tank. Non of our items are recommended for plastic tank repair containing gas or diesel.

Q: What are "coated metals"? Description of JB Weld Plastic Bonder states that it is suitable for use on "coated metals." What are they?

1 Answer
  • A: Metal Coatings-Thin films of material bonded to metals in order to add specific surface properties, such as corrosion or oxidation resistance, color, attractive appearance, wear resistance, optical properties, electrical resistance, or thermal protection Plastic Bonder is excellent on coated metals, but is not recommended on bare metal. Reason for not recommending Plastic Bonder to bare metals - Oxide layers will build up leading to eventual failure. Examples of coated metals that are suitable for plastic bonder - galvanized steel, aluminum, stainless steel, etc.”

Q: Polyethylene Will this bond polythylene? I want to use it to attach a skid plate to a canoe.

1 Answer
  • A: Very, very tough substrate to apply and bond to. Customer must heavily sand and abrade surface. Usually we recommend a solvent to use as well. Once the surface is porous then plastic bonder can adhere. We recommend that you do a test.

Q: Will This product bond to nylon?

1 Answer
  • A: The makeup of the nylon is different for every manufacturer. We cannot definitively answer whether Plastic Bonder will adhere to the nylon in question. If possible, a test on a small sample would be the best approach
