To answer the power question, you need to purchase a 12 Volt battery (rechargeable) to power the unit. and this unit comes with a summer transducer, the only difference between an ice and summer transducer is that an ice transducer is weighted. you can use the transducer it comes with if you mount it to something (a pole, wooden, plastic or likewise) and put it down your ice hole. As to my advice, if you are using this unit as a go between for both summer and winter it is a good unit, if you are using it predominantly for ice fishing go for the PiranhaMax Humminbird model. hope this was helpful. from your friends at.. #jimmiesfishing
