Regular purchase for residential kitchens

This is the 11th one I have bought, as my employer puts them in rental house kitchens for tenant use. Clear display showing if it is full or low pressure, makes it easy to monitor at property checks. So it saves trying to work out if there is a replacement required for the next tenant.

Questions

Q: In description of discharge times the answer is given as (eg) 10s. Does this mean 10 seconds ? Is that the maximum time the discharge takes place per use before recharging.

3 Answers
  • A: Yes Kenneth, you have 10 seconds of discharge time, which is actually quite a long period when you have a steady flow of powder coming out. Make sure you point the spray at the base of the fire and sweep side to side to push the fire away from the source. Only attempt to extinguisher a fire when it has just started and everyone has been evacuated from the area and the fire department or 911 has been called.

Q: Does this work for cars?

1 Answer
  • A: Yes this will work for cars, however, a better choice to cover more types of fires would be the Garrison 2.5lb 1A10BC, CTC Sku# 46-0078 The 1.0lb red fire extinguisher will not be effective on fires involving upholstery that may occur in your vehicle

Q: Is this usable outdoors ,stored in an unheated shed at minus 25 celcius.

1 Answer
  • A: All Garrison extinguishers can be stored at temperatures as low as -49C Please check your extinguisher monthly to ensure the pressure gauge needle (yellow) is in the green section, showing it is operational

Q: Where can they be recharged

1 Answer
  • A: All Garrison fire extinguishers can be serviced or recharged by looking in your local yellow pages directory under "FIRE" for companies that do servicing and recharging These companies are independent and because of Canadian Tire's excellent pricing, some of the smaller extinguishers may be more economical to purchase new, rather than servicing

Q: Where can I get my extinguisher recharged? How long before I need to recharge it after use?

1 Answer
  • A: To get your extinguisher recharged, you will need to look in the yellow pages (or internet yellow pages) under “Fire” for companies that do servicing and recharging in your area. There are a few things to consider when getting your extinguisher recharged; 1. Consider the age of the unit (a two digit # located on the bottom of the unit (stamped into the metal) indicates the year of manufacture), because anything over 6 years will require a more demanding service and will likely cost a minimum of $40 plus the effort of taking the extinguisher to the service company and retrieving it a day or so later 2. The cost of servicing this small unit is approximately 2/3rds the cost of purchasing a new unit and again you will have to drop it off and pick it up a few days later. After any use, it should be either recharged and/or replaced as soon as possible. Once the unit has been put in use, the pressure will decline afterwards and this can occur at varying amounts of time. I trust this will assist you with your questions posed above.

Q: Where can I find the manufacture date on this unit. Is it the "18 S" on the bottom? What does the "S" stand for, assuming the 18 is this year? Thank you!

1 Answer
  • A: On the bottom of the cylinder of each Medallion supplied models (46-0048, 46-0056, 46-0057, 46-0069 & 46-0078), the two digit number stamped into the metal represents the year of manufacture. A letter may also be present, but has no meaning.

Q: Is the black plastic thing around the 1lb extinguisher a bracket to hang it? Please post instructions on the appropriate way to hang this.

1 Answer
  • A: For this unit, you will need to secure the bracket to a wall using screws/plugs as described in the owners manual (not supplied with your purchase). The bracket is designed for the extinguisher to snap into it right at the neck of the extinguisher, below the plastic head assembly. The bracket should be mounted on the wall at a height where the bottom of the extinguisher should be approximately 48 inches (1.2m) above the floor.

Q: Did I buy the correct one for car engine (turbocharged) fires? I bought a General-Purpose Fire Extinguisher... it says it's rated for 1-A, 5-B and C. I just want to make sure if it is the correct one that I bought. It will be for emergency if in case I have engine fire in my car.

1 Answer
  • A: A Garrison 1A5BC, 2.0lb unit (CTC# 46-0057) will work well in extinguishing an engine fire and is also capable of extinguishing a fire involving materials found in the interior of your vehicle. You should monitor the pressure gauge on a monthly basis, ensuring the needle is in the green section. You should also secure the extinguisher in some manner that it is not rolling around. As an alternate choice, the Garrison 1A10BC, 2.5lb unit (CTC# 46-0078), has slightly more fire fighting capability when fuels are involved, and it comes with a metal vehicle bracket, that allows you to secure the unit, to prevent any rolling around.

Q: Is this a dry chemical extinguisher? Does it leave a residue? I want an extinguisher for kitchen use that does not leave a residue that could contaminate food. I would like to find a simple CO2 extinguisher, but for some reason they are not easy to find.

1 Answer
  • A: CO2 extinguishers are not sold at retail. The Garrison models, 46-0048 (chrome) & 46-0069 (red) are both rated 2BC and are ideal for use in the Kitchen. The content is Sodium Bicarbonate and is the best for use in case of kitchen fires. EMERGENCY OVERVIEW: This mixture of dry chemicals poses little hazard. Mechanical irritation of the eyes is possible during the use and maintenance of the extinguishing units. In addition to the above two extinguishers, to properly cover all fire types within households, I would also recommend purchase of either Garrison models, 46-0057 & 46-0078, and these two would also work on kitchen fires, but the chemical within is slightly more hazardous than the Sodium Bicarbonate.

Q: yellow gage is below the 0 line. do i need to refill it. i bought garrison fire extinguisher 3 years ago. now the yellow gage is showing below 0 mark.

1 Answer
  • A: With your receipt from Canadian Tire and if the safety tab has not been broken, it appears that the unit has lost pressure and this would be a warranty situation. You may take your fire extinguisher back to the store and if it is deemed a warranty issue the unit will be replaced with a new one.
