Q: will it show boat speed

A: As the unit stands alone it does not show nautical speed. It shows GPS speed which is basically speed over land. It is possible to achieve nautical speed readout but it would include a few accessories and cable hookups. Here are the part numbers of the accessories: Airmar P39 speed sensor 010-11050-00 Power Data Cable 010-10082-00
