Limestone screenings

I found this product good to work with, I could have used two bags but they only had one in stock.

Path cover

Previously I was using sand in my garden paths. The screening packs better and hardens until wet, but not mushy. Appears to keep weeds down. May track into the house if adjacent to a door. I like this product.

Q: Will the run through a lawn fertilizer spreader?

2 Answers
  • A: No. It tends to retain moisture and clump so it will not go through a lawn spreader.

Q: Can sand-like screenings be added between patio tiles that have already been laid, to prevent weeds coming up between tiles?

2 Answers
  • A: Both yes, and no. Limestone screenings will help prevent new weed seeds from securing a “foothold”. Existing weeds (dandelion, plantain, quack grass, etc) have developed an extensive root system under the patio stones. If unable to lift/reset stones, employ a sharp instrument ( solid hunting knife ) and dislodge the plant as deep as possible in the cracks. Pour copious amounts of vinegar into the space, and then apply the screenings, tamping them down as solid as possible. If able to lift/reset stones, then tear out all the offending roots, re-level with screenings, and after reset, fill cracks as described above.

Q: Can i put them between the patio tiles to cover the gaps between 2 tiles? are they small enough?

2 Answers
  • A: Screenings are intended to be used for bedding under the tiles. Typically 4-6" of packed screenings with 3/4-1" of sand (easier to level than screenings). After the tiles are laid, then either polymeric sand or brick jointing sand is poured between the tiles. If this is a new installation, polymeric could be used, but you must use a "jumping jack" tamper to vibrate the sand into the joints, as it must be done all at once (read the package instructions). If this is a repair, or you do not have access to a tamper, then use the brick jointing sand. It can be placed a bit at a time, and then more added as it settles in. Simply spread the brick jointing sand over the patio, and push it around with a broom until the gaps are filled. When it settles in, add more. Whether you use polymeric sand or brick jointing sand, be sure to purchase it in a place that keeps it indoors so it stays dry. While brick jointing sand can be dried out and used, polymeric sand is activated when it gets wet, and cannot be reactivated.

Q: doing a 10x10 how many bags do i need

1 Answer
  • A: One bag of Limestone Screening will cover approximately 2 1/2 square feet at a depth of 2 inches. Therefore you will require approximately 40 bags to cover an area 100 square feet (10 feet by 10 feet), 2 inches deep.
