Grows fast, but looks awful, full of annuals

This grass should be absolutely last resort, do not apply this on your lawn unless you're desperate. The grasses in question are low grade wild crop seed that will just grow too fast, require three times the mowing, will vary in color and thickness wildly and just makes for a messy lawn. After making the mistake of trusting this low garde grass seed, I actually had to cull some sections of my lawn in order to accommodate higher quality seed, making sure this terrible grass wouldn't grow back under it.

No, I do not recommend this product.

  • Grass already needs mowing after 3 days
  • It may look decent, but this is after excessive effort
  • The grass is leggy, varies in width and grows too fast
  • At the next season, most of this grass died as there is too much annual grass seed in the mix

Questions

1 - 6 of 6 Questions

Q: Will the seeds die if temperature gets too cold? I had put down the grass seed beginning of May, when temperature is optimal at around 18-23 degrees. a few days after seeding, however, it got really cold with a low of -4C and snowed a little bit for a day

1 Answer
  • A: I wouldn't plant seeds unless your temperatures stay above freezing for at least two weeks after putting down. The ryegrass should sprout in 5-7 days. The bluegrass can take up to 14 days to sprout. Once sprouted they can survive the freezing temperatures.

Q: Is this really 0 percent weed free? That explains the complaints.

1 Answer
  • A: This seed is tested and guaranteed 99% weed free, weed seeds can be blown from other yards or dropped by birds, the best way to ensure weeds do not germinate is by having a thick lush lawn.

Q: Does it grow well on clay? Also, what's the types of blades exactly in the mix?

1 Answer
  • A: Clay soils can be problematic in that they contain such small particles that do not allow for moisture to get through, or for pore space between the particles. A good soil should have a large percentage of pore space to allow roots to grow. Renovating the area by adding at least 3 to 4 inches of good compost or top soil and tilling it in to a depth of 5 to 6 inches will greatly help. Also clay can be acidic in nature, so it would be beneficial to check the pH and amend accordingly. If you can get lots of organic matter into the soil, with the correct pH then yes this grass will grow well there. This blend is suitable for lower maintenance and play areas. It contains Creeping Red Fescue, Intermediate Fescue, Annual Ryegrass, and Kentucky Bluegrass. After establishing the grass, be sure to maintain regular feedings with a good fertilizer such as CIL Golfgreen Lawn Fertilizer, plus adding a good top dressing to the lawn every spring will add more organic matter, which will continue to improve your soil.
