works as intended, but...

Supplied screws corroded after one season. Bottom connection to downspout MUST be caulked to stop water from running down the outside of the downspout. Leaf catcher can be inserted incorrectly, which will result in little or no water being diverted to rain barrel.

The downspout on the bottom fits inside the housing and water ends up leaking out. It would have been better to have it fit outside...

some design flaws

The diverter comes with adapters to fit the smaller size of downspout that most people have. However, the way it's set up is that the bottom part of the downspout fits inside the diverter which causes leaks. Apparently some people have solved this by using caulking.
Second, the removable filter also acts as the main component that redirects water. Because it's removable during light rains the water trickles around the filter and down the downspout instead of going to the rain barrel. Therefore, after two full days of intermittent, light rainfall my barrel was empty. I would return it if i hadn't already cut my downspout in half and put new screwholes in it. I may just silicon the filter into place since it's still easy enough to clear without removing it.
No, I do not recommend this product.

Q: Does water only go down the downspout once the rain barrel is full, or does it always come down the downspout with some going into the rain barrel?

A: Yes, some water will always go down the downspout as some water clings to the clear plastic shield and bypasses the diverter.

Q: How does it work? What is the principle of operation of this diverter? How does it manage to divert rainwater to a non-full barrel, but then let water go straight down when the barrel is full? Does it collect all of the water with light rain?

A: Thank you for contacting Fiskars. When the barrel is full, the water backs up the connecting tube back into the diverter, which causes the water to travel down and out the bottom of the downspout. It all depends on how full the barrel is preceding 'light rain' to determine the amount collected. Q: Can I connect an overflow hose from the rain barrel to this diverter so that when the barrel is full, any excess water continues down the downspout?
