    Not working-yet

I bought this and my wires are sitting under 4 inches of ICE. I asked Gemini AI why and it said because my overhang was so small, 8 inches, that the "V" I made did not have enough of the sensor wire to set of the moisture censor. So, the AI said my solution was to run more sensor wire through the first 8 inches of my roof. IE I will run it through 3 or 4 little Vs then spike the remainder straight up (the remainder's tip has the temperature censor). So, not working NOW, maybe next winter.

Had to return the products after reading instructions at home. It turns out that the product is probably correct for what I want, but even after reading the instructions, I was not sure that this would work for me

No, I do not recommend this product.

Q: Can you install this product in the winter when ice has formed already? i have ice dams causing water to leak.

    • A: I'd suggest contacting Emerson Easyheat online support to ask about this situation. They've been helpful when i've had to contact them in the past.

Q: Is this control available with a longer sensor wire? The one supplies does not reach the warmest part of my roof.

    • A: The RS-2 Controller is only supplied with 10 ft (3 m) of sensor wire. To route the sensor wire on your install, lay the Splice Connection and sensor wire along the bottom of the gutter within two inches of the roof de-icing cable. Route the sensor wire over at least one gutter support strap or nail in order to sense the full depth of the gutter, then route along one triangular weave of the heating cable on the roof as per diagram. At the peak of the second triangle, attach the sensor wire up the roof, at least 2 feet (60.96 cm) past the heater wire.

Q: Can this be used to regulate snow and ice build up on a polyethylene tarp instead of a roof

    2 Answers
    • A: Yes, and no. This particular controller absolutely can do it, but the trigger for power is a combination of temperature and moisture within a preset (and unchangeable) range, good for its promoted purpose. That said, although very specific, if your project would want the same triggers, sure, this would work. Here's what the manual says: "If the [ambient] temperature is below 4C (40F) AND at least 10-inches (25.40-cm) of the sensor [wire] is laying in (or on) water, then the R2 will apply power... Note that snow or ice surrounding the sensor wire WILL NOT result in activation of the RS2 to energize the cables." Having said that, the companion heat trace wire itself would not be appropriate to be used on a poly tarp. The manufacturer lists many materials that are incompatible (e.g. a rubber roof), and despite the poly tarp having better flame resistance, it'd be risky. If you're looking for a slightly more basic temperature triggered switch, although it uses a probe, something like a Digital Seedling Heat Mat Thermostat Controller (I've got one that has a range of 40-108F) may be worth looking at.

Q: Could this be used on a mansard roof? (i.e. the gutter is 1 story below the edge of the roof where the cable zig zags

    2 Answers
    • A: The RS-2 will work on a mansard roof provided that its sensor wire will be placed on a heated section part of the roof (were at least 10 inches of the sensor wire should be able to sense melted ice/snow or water) and also they will be able to attached the sensor wire using its clips. Further, please check their roof material, for asphalt tab shingles use our ADKS or RC or PSR heating cables. If the roof is made of metal, flat, composite (tar and gravel), rubber, clay or wood, use only the PSR heating cable.

Q: Peut-on utiliser deux câbles sur un même contrôleur.

A: No, the RS2 is made to accept only one cable per unit, the maximum cable size that can be connected to the RS2 is 1200 Watts. Risk of fire, electric shock or the formation of ice dams can result from a larger cable or from multiple cables being connected.

Q: can this product be used inside aluminun eave trough

    1 Answer
    • A: Yes…The unit itself is mounted under the overhang and the sensor cable is then run in the eave trough. The sensor cable then detects both moisture and temperature to activate the roof cable when needed. One RS2 (052-2599) per roof cable.

Q: I just don't see the length of this cabe on this page. Am I blind?

    1 Answer
    • A: This product is a control to be used with the roof de-icing cables – it monitors the temperature and moisture on the roof with sensors and turns the cables on/off. The individual cable product numbers are: 052-2576,052-2577,052-2578,052-2579,052-2580,052-2581,052-2582,052-2583. The lengths of each are listed on the website for each.

Q: What is the power usage when plugged in but low temperature and moisture conditions are not present.

    1 Answer
    • A: The RS-2 requires two conditions present to energize the de-icing cable. Both cold temperature, on at 3C/38F, and off at 9C/48F and the presence of runoff water from the roof in contact with the sensor wire. If only one condition exists, the control will not activate the cable. Cables are designed to create a flow of water to avoid possible ice build up. The control when operating will draw a max of 10 amps.

Q: I have found in the past that the snow starts melting on my roof at 2-3 below zero and this is when the ice starts building If this only starts when moisture and 3 above are met , the damage would already be done,I.E. ice dams? Am I correct in my diagnosis

    1 Answer
    • A: The RS2 requires 2 conditions to be met before it energizes the heating cable. It requires a temperature that is 3°C or colder and the presence of water. As long as these conditions continue to be satisfied, the RS2 will continue to power the roof and gutter de-icing cable. The RS2 does not de-energize the roof cable unless one of the above mentioned conditions is no longer being met. i.e. the temperature has risen above 3°C or the temperature has dropped sufficiently below freezing causing the water supply to stop due to freezing. This should allow the water to flow along the cable until it gets to the ground so that it is no longer on the roof where it could cause ice dams.
