Deceiving efficiencies

I bought this unit because of the high-efficiency rating, but this is deceiving. The efficiency compared " ordinary flow-through humidifiers." The actual efficiency is less than 40%. I based this on the published flow rate and the amount of wastewater I collected over a period of time. I did this over a number of days then averaged the result. Perhaps their disk-based humidifier is more efficient, but the flow-through wastes more water than is converted to vapour. I contacted the manufacturer, and I was told: "However, without verifying all the variables (intake air temperature, intake air volume, the number of cycles, water temperature and water inflow rate) the actual conversion rate is still based on assumptions." In other words, their tests are based on ideal conditions and not real-life environments. To boot there basing these efficiencies on some unknown competitor.

Not good

Does require maintenance every month otherwise gets clogged. I also tried autoflush - it is made from plastic, in a month or so will stop working once the plastic worn out. I just removed mine and bought a better one, message me and i will give you mine for free to try it out. Stay away from this scam

No, I do not recommend this product.

Great product and sale price but was missing parts - End cap with motor.

I bought one yesterday. My house has an older version and figured it would be an easy swap. However, upon assembling, I found that it was missing the end cap which also contains the motor! The box did not appear to be previously opened. I'm a stickler for checking things like that. My current humidifier/older model (as mentioned already) uses a motor that turns a plastic gear and the drum also has a plastic gear that slides on and sits on a D shaped metal bar/pin to drive it. The new version does not have a D shaped pin and doesn't use gears, so I couldn't just retrofit things to make it work. I'll now have to go back to the store and see what can be done to get me the missing part. This is a pain in the butt, especially when it is super cold out! Maybe this is why they are on sale/clearance for $100 off? I'll post a follow up message after I go back tonight.

First humidifier for furnace

Have had it since October. Installed myself, easy install, just make sure its level. Used the supplied humidistat, works but if home humidity is low humidifier will run 24/7. Purchased a Honeywell Humidipro(installed professionaly, not shown in photo) and now humidifier only comes on when furnace comes on, should extend life of motor. Put a manual drain valve on unit with garden hose directly to floor drain. Drain weekly(no worries of electronic valve not working). When doing the monthly cleaning, pull out drum, shut off water, drain reservoir while lightly rubbing bottom of pan to loosen scale, turn on water and continue to rub bottom to flush out debris. I just rinse the drum under hot water to remove build up. Overal pleased with it, easy maintenance and with addition of better humidistat it is a good system with no added costs of filter pads. Keeps humidity at a comfortable level. Humidipro takes into account outside air temp and humidity to control humidifier.

Great Product

I have purchased three of these furnace humidifiers . One for my place , one for my daughter's house and one for a friend's house that did not have a humidifier on their furnace . Easy to install . Easy to maintain . I like the see through cover so you can see if the discs are scaling up . I usually remove the disc assembly twice a season and soak it in a tub of white vinegar to clean it and the assembly comes out just like new . I have had my unit for about 3 years now and it still looks like new . I have a hygrometer in my living room and it follows the changes i make on the humidistat on the return side of the duct work on the furnace .

Yes, I recommend this product.

Q: Does the unit have its own plugin power source or does it need to have power from the furnace?

4 Answers
  • A: It comes with a plug-in transformer which you can use if you do not want to wire it directly to your furnace.

Q: Can this unit be controlled automatically by a humidistat, and if so, will it also compensate/change %setting for changes in outdoor temp?

4 Answers
  • A: I have owned 2 Desert Spring units. Both came with a basic humidistat. This humidistat did not compensate for outdoor temperature but I know at one time some Desert Spring dealers did offer one that did (for an additional cost). As long as the humidistat is designed for the same voltage, I don't see why you could not use this humidifier with any after-market humidistat.

Q: can it be installed on 9" wide ducting?

4 Answers
  • A: I just installed it on an 8" wide plenum and it (barely) fit. Toughest problem was that along one side edge, the plenum is actually 3 layers thick due to it being a folded corner seam, so I had to use a jigsaw for a small part of it (note: I wouldn't use a jig saw to cut the entire opening, as another poster suggested: if the fine metal filings/dust gets past your furnace filter, it could cause furnace motor problems which might void your furnace warranty.

Q: Is it connected directly to water line?

3 Answers
  • A: Yes, with a provided and commonly-used brass "stinger" style saddle valve that you tighten around a copper water line, then you rotate the T-handle to pierce the copper pipe. After installation, the T-handle also functions as the water supply on/off control to the humidifier. A decent length of clear plastic tubing is included to go from the stinger valve to the unit's inlet. Read my detailed review for some important notes about parts issues and outdated/incorrect installation manual.

Q: Will the unit run if the funace fan is blowing with no heat? I want to be able to control humidity consistently with a humidistat. The furnace fan funs constantly so I'd like to know if the unit will run even when the air from the furnace is not warm. The unit we have now only comes on when the air is warm.

2 Answers
  • A: As long as the furnace fan is running and the humidistat is calling for humidity, this humidifier will operate. The humidistat will prevent over-humidification by turning the motor off when the humidity reaches the desired level. The humidity output will be lower when you are recirculating room temp air than on the heat cycle, but it will still add some humidity.
