Very Unreliable

Tried this few months ago. Overall, I am very dissatisfied with the CURT 51180 Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller, mainly because of a serious safety issue. The controller is easy to use, and the initial setup was not difficult. Everything worked perfectly when I first started using it for camping. However, on the way home from a camping trip, the trailer brakes completely failed to work, even though the Bluetooth connection was still active and appeared to be connected normally. This is not a minor issue where the Bluetooth signal is weak and reconnecting solves the problem. The controller was connected, but the brakes simply did not respond. This is an extremely serious safety concern. A brake controller should be reliable every single time. One failure at the wrong moment could be enough to cause a serious accident or even put someone's life at risk. For something that is directly responsible for trailer braking, I find this level of unreliability completely unacceptable. I cannot recommend this product when a single unexpected failure can have potentially life-threatening consequences.

Work perfectly!!! Yes it's a bit pricey, but considering the price of a brake module plus the installation it's not that different... And if I change vehicle it follows me so it's a win win!!!

Echo Wireless Brake Controller saved our Camping Summer

This controller was our only option because of incompatibility with factory wiring on our 2024 Nissan Pathfinder with regular wired in controller. Tongue mounted, wired brake controllers could run over $600! Download the app, enter the unique PIN provided, plug and play. We were on our way. Very pleased. Only drawback so far is app updates. Suggest you ensure the app is working the day before you want to tow.

Q: My car only a 4 pin connector on it so I bought a 7 pins adaptor to be able to attach it to this wireless controller. Would it work even though there is no electric brake wire going to the 7 pins adaptor?

  • A: Yes as this unit doesn’t require an electric brake wire, it uses an internal sensor to determine braking.

  • A: If your 2012 jeep Grand Cherokee is already equipped quit a 7 pin trailer connector, then yes. This brake controller plugs into any 7 pin trailer connector. If your jeep doesn't have a 7 pin connector installed, there are kits that you can buy out there to add this connector to your vehicle. Etrailer.com is a good place to look to vet something compatible with your vehicle.

  • A: Yes. It is blue tooth connected to your phone. Once you have set the braking force to your requirements you can turn your phone off and it continues to work on your saved setting. Cell coverage is not required for this controller to work.
