So much potential, but it falls shory

I'm happy cooking with this unit, but it gets so hot that the handles are too hot to touch. The handle on the top vent melted.

Concept is great but quality is just not there

I bought this two summers ago. Fairly easy to put together. Major design flaws: using nuts and bolts combined with felt liners instead of welding. The heat from cooking even after a few months left the handles on the side and the lid very wobbly. Not what you want when dealing with a very hot BBQ. The first use caused the powder coat to peel off the round base. Coleman was very good about sending a replacement stand and bowl parts very quickly. Now it is a very wobbly BBQ that I have decided to replace. I chose this one after 30 years of WEBERS as weber had gotten very cheap with construction and thin aluminum parts...now will be back shopping for a more sturdy model. The lid has its hanging hook offset from the handle which makes for awkward hand movement...again not fun when the grill is at 500 plus degrees. The hinged grill is much appreciated and works well when you need to add charcoal. Overall not buying another Coleman until design improved.

    Charcoal BBQ, yummmm

Bought this for hubbs to replace the propane BBQ that died. Took a bit to get use to heating and cooking on it but seriously... so worth it. Everything taste better over charcoal. Great surface size, vent controls, maneuverability. Only down side is the handle on the lid gets hot, but we've always got an oven mitt close by.

    Yes, I recommend this product.

used this unit about 5 times and the handle broke on the ash pot on the bottom. The fit of the asm. is poor. after one season the paint has peeled and the handles are wobbly. I bought it only because it was coleman

    Garbage

I've had a weber for the past 9 years, but at the moment money is a bit tight so I figured this looked similar and it's cheaper so I'll give it a try. I think those on here who says this is the same as a Weber have never had a Weber. First, during assembly I had to return to the store twice for replacements of defective parts. A spot weld was broken (glad it didn't break a few days later so at least I could return the part in unused condition), and the end of one of the legs was squished and didn't fit into another piece as a result. Two trips to the store later, I finish assembling it and do a simple, relatively low heat, hamburger BBQ. The handle on top got so hot I couldn't touch it. A Weber is designed with handles which can actually be used when the BBQ is... you know... hot. These are just big metal bowls for cooking... it seems reasonable to think that one is the same as another... but I really enjoy BBQing and now I'm stuck with this subpar kettle for the next few years as I assume I can't return a used product. I should just have waited until I could get a Weber. Argh.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Q: Is this a lump or briquette charcoal bbq?

    2 Answers
    • A: Thank you for your question. The Coleman Cookout Kettle can handle both briquette and lump charcoal, we recommend using briquette charcoal as briquettes tend to burn longer and at more controlled (lower) temperatures than lump charcoal.
