Limited ability in varying conditions. Works okay during full sun and under load. Does not work well in low light, nor does it top up the battery when not under load.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Q: od readings when im charging my battery with it in a sunny day with no clouds i keep getting random reedings like 1 second im getting.2amps then 3amps then back to.5 within like 3 seconds is thisnormal or not

      • A: That looks like you have an intermittent problem in your wiring or in your charge controller, could even be a problem with your battery. One other consideration is your load. Is someone turning on and off devices that put quite a drain on your battery? Seeing this much of a change in current does not seem normal if there are no other influences.

Q: does the 12V/30amp charge controller have a built in protection for overdischarge of hte battery I know it proptects from reverse dischsrge into the solar panel, but I need to know if it will shut off the battery load if the battery gets too low thanks

      • A: No, the charge controller is betwenen the solar panels and the battery not between the battery and load. CT has another device that they sell which monitors battery voltage and will shut off the load if the voltage drops too low. I had one on a car, was merrily driving along and all of a sudden the power cut out. Not sure why, possibly it was affected by someone driving by with a mobile radio transmitting. decided I could not risk that so removed it and took it back to CT and got my money back. So the answer is simply that what you want is a completely different device.

Q: Do I have to have a charge cotroller for each solar pack I want to run two solar 15watt panels , will I need a charge controller as well? and will I need two controller's? to run both of them or can I get away with two 15watt solar panels and one charge controller pack?

      • A: You can parallel up several arrays and run them through one charge controller. Ideally the arrays should be all of the same type so that each one is sharing the charge appropriately. I would not pair up an amorphous silicon panel and a polycrystalline one, they are quite different the way they do their job. Also, each panel should have Schottky diodes in it that prevent another panel from putting back current in it. Most panels have this built right in and so is not usually a concern.

Q: How many panels can you hook up to this? I currently have two 5.5 watt panels. Can I hook up different panels to this unit? Example being, use my 2 5.5watt panels and add a 80 watt panel to give me more power to charge a bank of batteries?

      • A: Think of it this way - if this controller is rated at up to 30 amps then using a little math where watts equals roughly volts times amps 12 X 30 = 360 watts. This means you can parallel up quite a few panels before you get to the 360 watt level. The thing you may find problematic is that not all panels have the same makeup. Some are amorphous silicon, some are polycrystalline, and there are others. All produce power from the sun's rays but all at different rates. Ideally you should at least have them paralleled up that are of the same atomic structure. You can often determine that simply by looking at the cells.

Q: What setting for the 12V Eliminator Deep Cycle battery? What setting (Lead acid or gel cell) does one use with the 12V Eliminator Renewable Energy Deep Cycle Battery (Product #11-1879-8) that Canadian Tire sells? It is an AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) battery.

      3 Answers
      • A: Just drop the AGM in place of a regular float battery. Just make sure that the charge voltage rate never exceeds around 15volts. Not likely to happen with this controller anyway. The AGM batteries are taking over from gel batteries as they do a better job. So the answer to your question is to choose the lead acid battery setting.

Q: What temperatures does can this operate in? High/Low

      • A: If the controller is in a cold climate you can probably use it up to its maximum current value. If you use it in a hot desert climate up to 150F it should be, at least, in the shade and probably used at a derated current level, say 20 amps maximum. These PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) controller type devices basically work as switches and so don't create a lot of heat as would analog devices so you can get away with more without them self destructing.

Q: Is this charger compatible with ROCKSOLAR Foldable 100W Solar Panel DC & USB Output, IP X 4

      2 Answers
      • A: The 30amp charger is designed more for use with a camper or larger power requirement. Coleman does also have a smaller version charger sold on the same shelf as the 30amp one.It would probably be more compatible.

Q: How many 12 volt batteries can I connect to the Colman 30A, 12V Digital Solar Panel Charge Controller?

      2 Answers
      • A: Theoretically, it doesn't really matter how many batteries are connected to the charge controller. But, you are limited to a 12 volt system, so the batteries must be connected in parallel. Also, this is a pretty simple charge controller with no way to properly monitor batteries cells or balance them. It only has capacity for a 30 amp solar array. If you want multiple batteries, you should consider a better MPPT controller and use a higher voltage.
