Q: What's in this product, besides kelp, and in what ratios? How is each component made? How does it rate in terms of environmental sustainability?

A: 59-4596 CIL Plus! Triple Mix + Kelp contains: Canadian sphagnum peat, humus, compost, and kelp. Other than kelp there's: Canadian sphagnum peat moss from Premier Tech bogs so it's considered sustainable as Premier Tech is a leader in bog rehabilitation. Peat harvested for growing purposes is not a sustainability issue in Canada. Black Humus Also from Premier Tech bogs Compost it doesn't say it on the bag but it's derived from cattle manure. The manure is composted following strict regulations and tested for fecal coliform, heavy metals and nutrients. It's used only if it passes. We do not provide the recipe proportions.

Q: Is it possible to use this soil for potted plants?

A: It's not ideal to use for potted plants. Plants will survive, but not thrive. Since the Triple Mix doesn't contain perlite, the soil may compact and not provide adequate aeration and drainage that potted plants generally need. However, since peat moss is a major component of the Triple Mix, the mix will maintain some structure that will help in this case. Bottom line, it will not perform as well as a specific potting soil, like the CIL Plus Potting, that's designed for potted plants. The Triple Mix can be improved for potted plants by adding some Horticultural Perlite to about 10% of the total blend.
