Q: how does the pole connect to battery

A: The Stern Light doesn't connect to the battery. The fixed seat that the pole sits in is connected to the battery. The pole has a +/ - connection and can only sit in the seat one way. There is a screw ensuring that the pole can go into the seat with the screw to the stern of the boat.

Q: How is this powered? Plug in? Battery that needs to be charged?

A: This is powered from your vessel's battery; on most boats, there is a receptacle on the stern that this plugs into. The receptacle is recessed and has two contact pins. This is typically stowed away when not in use. There are special clips available that are designed to hold this lamp, and they are typically mounted in one of the storage areas on the boat.
