Go Away Ice

(This review was collected as part of a promotion.) One of the fastest ice melt that you can see the spread then sounds like rice krispies. Scrape the slush and you can have a better understanding literaly.

Q: Alaska Ice Melt that I bought for this season went rock hard before it could be used - both shaker and sealed refill bag totally useless. Have used for several years with no problems. Storage area unchanged - garage/workshop area, Why??

A: I have always bought the jugs, not the big containers. Had the big container once and it went hard. The jugs I have outside in the garage winter & summer and never harden up.

A: I would not trust it on a steel roof as it has eaten into my driveway and ruined it.

Q: Is it safe for pets?
1 Answer
A: Hello Hjk1, Ice melters are relatively safe to pets, but we recommend that you keep them indoors while an ice melter is being employed, and until the treated area has been shoveled clear, and be allowed to dry. A prolonged exposure could dry out their paws so a better choice would be Alaskan Pet Friendly Melter that is made of zeolite and urea. If you need more information, you can contact us at info@alaskan.ca. Thank you.

Q: Is this product safe on concrete?
1 Answer
A: Hello Chinook, Most concrete damage is a result of the natural effects of freeze/thaw cycles, not a chemical attack by an ice melter. To avoid concrete damage, remove the slush immediately as it is formed. If you are unsure of the quality of your concrete, use traction sand only. Before applying Alaskan Premium Ice Melter, read the label for full precautions, and always remove snow and ice as soon as melting action has loosened ice. Thank you!

Q: After the Alaskan ice melter leaked across my basement floor, it left a dark stain on the concrete. How can that be removed?
Sponging the stain with water and detergent didn't remove it.

A: Alaskan Premium Ice Melter is hygroscopic and if left exposed to the air will draw in enough moisture to turn into a liquid, whichi can be then absorbed into porous surfaces. Being blended from different forms of salt, Calcium Chloride, Sodium Chloride and urea, along with a colour marker similar to the one used in laundry products, the stain you are seeing simply requires rinsing with plenty of water to flush the salts out of the surface, along with the colour marker.

Q: A bag of Alaskan ice melter is leaking a blue liquid. How can it be removed? Should the rest go to the landfill or a hazardous chemical dropoff?
To contain the leak, I put the ice melter bag into a contractor-grade garbage bag. It's leaking through that bag, too.

A: Alaskan Premium Ice Metler contains Calcium Chloride, which is hygroscopic, it must always be stored in the original packaging, tightly sealed. If left exposed to the air it will begin to absorb moisture, and in periods of high humidity, it can actually absorb enough moisture to turn itself into a liquid. Unfortunately once it dries out, it will become a solid block, which can not easily be broken up without using heavy machinery. If it is still in a slightly granular form, but stuck together, you may try using a hammer to break it up, but if this does not work we recommend disposing of the product and getting a fresh supply. It may be safely disposed of at your local Regional Hazardous Household Waste Station. You will find a listing for this in the government pages of your phone book, under waste.
