A: There are many factors to consider before using an ice melter; things such as the porosity, strength and durability of the surface. As these aspects can vary greatly, there is no guaranteed that an ice melter will not harm any surface, even if it is used as directed. We do not recommend it as a replacement for the removal or shovelling of snow and ice, but as an aid to help with the removal of stubborn ice and snow. Most surface damage is a result of the natural effects of freeze-thaw cycles, not a chemical attack by the actual ice melter. When you melt snow and ice you create a briny solution that will be absorbed into porous surfaces. This briny water will refreeze when it becomes too diluted, or the temperature drops below the minimum melting point. The expanding briny water puts pressure from the inside, ultimately causing surface spalling. Shovelling the treated area will allow the area to dry, stopping the freeze-that cycling. Therefore, ice melter is not recommended on the following surfaces: • Concrete that is less than 1 year old. • Patterned and/or coloured concrete. • Stone or brick masonry (including Flagstone). • Pre-cast concrete (steps or paving stones). • Stone or concrete surfaces that are chipped, cracked, spalled or have exposed aggregate. • Wooden surfaces such as decks. • Roofs or gutters.

A: Alaskan Melt & Grip is formulated with triple-screened Sodium Chloride, which can have a drying or caustic affect with prolonged exposure to skin. Be sure to use with caution, and wash hands after use.
