Best Paper for Heavy Prepping

If you have a major project ahead of you—like stripping down rough lumber, tackling basement framing prep, or removing old layers of stubborn paint and finish—stop buying the cheap, basic sandpaper sheets. I picked up a pack of the 3M Pro Grade Precision Coarse sheets (the purple stuff) for a heavy-duty refinishing job, and it completely changed my perspective on hand-sanding. Here is why this stuff stands out: The No-Slip Grip is a Game Changer: Normally, when you fold a sheet of sandpaper, the paper backing slides against itself, causing wrinkles, tears, and immediate hand cramps from pinching it tight. The backing on these sheets has a rubbery, tacky texture. When you fold it over, it locks onto itself or your sanding block and doesn't budge. You can sand with a completely open, relaxed hand, which saves a massive amount of fatigue if you are working for hours. Incredible Cutting Speed: The coarse grit (using their Cubitron industrial tech) absolutely eats through rough surfaces, splinters, and old finishes. It levels high spots and preps surfaces for the next step way faster than standard garnet paper. Insane Longevity & Clog Resistance: Cheap paper usually clogs up with dust within five minutes and becomes useless. This stuff resists loading incredibly well. When it does start getting dusty, you can literally just slap the back of the sheet or flick it with your finger, and the dust falls right out of the grit, leaving it ready to cut again. One sheet easily lasts three to four times longer than the old-school tan sheets. Tough and Flexible: It doesn't crack or tear cleanly at the seams when you roll it or try to push it into tight corners. It conforms nicely to the shape you're working on without falling apart. The Verdict: Yes, it costs a little bit more upfront than the economy packs, but because a single sheet lasts forever and saves your hands from aching, it actually ends up being cheaper and faster in the long run. If you are doing any serious DIY, furniture restoration, or paint prep, this is the only paper to bother with. Highly recommend.
