    Best Primer for Anything Nasty

We purchased a home with 20+ years cigarette smoke damage. After a very quick wipe down and a coat of this primer all of the nastiness was sealed in. Nothing peeking through the paint at all. Worth the absurdly high pricetag.

    Best Primer

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Zinsser BIN Primer works great! It's the only brand I will use. It works great at covering old paint and bolder colors at that. It doesn't take a lot to cover the old color either. I would definitely recommend it!

Q: What paint can be used over this product? Does it have to be oil based?

    2 Answers
    • A: You can use any kind of paint you want. This is my "go-to" primer for so many things...wood, because it seals in the tannins, laminate and other hard to paint substrates because it has excellent adhering properties. Plus it sands to a fine powder, so you can get a super smooth finish if you want. I always keep a gallon of this on hand, it's suitable for almost every project I do. Tip: your tools will dry out quickly, so wrap your brushes and rollers sleeves in thick plastic (I keep my old bread bags just for this) and put them in the freezer between coats. You need to use denatured alcohol or strong ammonia to clean your tools, so I usually just toss my tools out once they've dried out too much. The freezer will keep your tools usable for several days to a week, longer if you leave enough primer in them so they stay 'wet' in the plastic.

Q: This product is stated here to be latex, but all the professionals who recommended it describe it as alkyd and not water soluble, hence no water cleanup. Is "latex" an error?

    • A: Hi JustMe, Our Zinsser BIN has a Shellac-Base resin. However, it also contains denatured alcohol and water. Clean application tools in a solution of 1-part ammonia and 3-parts water immediately after use. If the product has dried on the tools, soak overnight in a solution of equal parts ammonia and water. Scrub clean with a stiff brush.

    • A: Bonjour, Bonne question!

    • A: Yes this should be used in a well ventilated area. The smell will go away once dry and does not linger.

    1 Answer
    • A: Zinsser Bin is not a vapor barrier product, Although It can be used as a Odor Barrier. Bin will not stop moisture or vapor from passing though any surface. I would not recommended Zinsser Bin Primer for this application. Limitations – Not recommended for whole surface exterior application or for application to floors or decks or surfaces subject to immersion or prolonged contact with water.
