Terrible experience

I bought these a week ago to replace tines on my dethatcher, they lasted 10 minutes and all broke. Went back and exchanged for new ones, once again lasted 10 minutes and were all broken. Would not recommend.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Hello Lou77. We are sorry to hear about your experience. The most common reason is the tines hitting rocks, roots, or other buried objects that the tiller couldn't clear. This can cause the tines to bend, shear, or break. To prevent this, clear the area. Remove any visible rocks, debris, or obstructions before starting. If tilling in a new area, start with the depth bars set low (tilling shallowly) and gradually increase the depth as you go. Be aware that roots or rocks can be buried under the surface and may not be immediately visible. To prevent tine breakage here are a few tips that might be helpful. Let the wheels pull the tiller while tilling, and walk on the side that is not yet finished. Do not force the tines, if you encounter an obstruction that the tines can not clear, stop and address the problem rather than forcing the tiller. If you have further concerns or simply want to discuss your issues further, we invite you to call Yardworks customer service at 1-866-523-5218 and one of their team members can assist in resolving your concerns. Hello emerald. We are sorry to hear one of the tines were missing from the package. Unfortunately, individual tines are not on the exploded view of replacement parts. With that said, we, unfortunately, did not have a part number to place an order for. We will always do our best to replace parts that we have but, in some cases, we do not have the option. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused. At your convenience, please contact Yardworks customer service at 1-866-523-5218 and one of their team members can assist in resolving your concerns. GreenworksTools

Through the years many of the tines have broken on my detacher. I looked into whether I had to purchase a new machine or just tines. I found out you could purchase new tines and they had them at Canadian Tire. I made the purchase a set to replacing them. This went well and I now have a new machine ready for the next use.

Q: Bought two bags of these at the same time as when we purchased the matching dethatcher.  Two seasons later I need to replace some tines and they are about 1/2” shorter than original tines?

  • A: I have not used my replacement tines, but it should be ok if they are slightly shorter as the de thatcher has adjustable height settings.

Q: How does the tine shaft come apart to replace the tines?

  • A: Turn machine upside down. Remove the 2 screws from the chassis holding the right non-drive wheel in place. Pull wheel assembly toward you and remove wheel. The tine roller assembly should now be free to disengage from the left drive wheel side. Remove the 2 screws (includes lock washer and flat washer) from each tine unit. Each tine unit needs to be split apart and separated from the centre hub. Using a small hammer tap on the indent of the one half tine assembly until it shows separation. Do not remove completely. Hard to get back in place if you do. Using a screwdriver, now separate the tine unit on this one side only until the pin of the tine assembly is just above the adjacent one. Using a small tool, nail or screwdriver, tap the pin until it is almost through. Remove the old tine and insert the new one, make sure tine is in the right way. Tap the pin back into place, and the tine assembly back into place. Repeat for the other half if necessary until all have been replaced. Job took about 45 minutes. Hope this helps.

Q: I am looking at the Yardworks dethatcher #06-0386. It references using replacement tines #060-6115. When you go to the tines description it says only compatible with models purchased before 2020. Why would they be listed for a unit purchased in 2022?

2 Answers
  • A: In this situation I would buy the available tines and compare them to the ones on your dethatcher. (Don’t destroy the packaging).  If they are identical looking then I would use them.

  • A: it sounds as though you may have an older style unit, where the tines could not be changed individually. a complete tines conversion kit is available, which would mean in the future you would be able to use these replacement tines. call the toll free helpline : 1 866 523-5218.
