They don't make hatchets like they used to, thank goodness. Love the big hook at the end of the handle. The hook almost completely eliminates the possibility that the tool will slip out of your hand when swinging hard as well as when pulling hard. When you bury it deep in the wood and have trouble removing it you wiggle it and pull hard. The hook also makes it easy to hang the axe on a nail or tree branch. Not sure what the circular depressions are for but in a pinch they work pretty good as an ashtray. The head and at least part of the handle are a single cast piece. The rubber portion of the handle is molded over the metal part which makes it virtually impossible for the head to separate from the handle or to break the handle with an overstrike.

    Yes, I recommend this product.

    1 - 1 of 1 Question

Q: Does it have a full metal tang that runs the length of the handle

    • A: I disagree that the handle is entirely fibreglass as reported by the Canadian Tire team. I can honestly state the tang is metal but it does not run the full length of the handle. I drilled a couple small test holes through the rubber, one 6" from the head and another 4" from the heel of the handle. On the first hole I definitely hit metal below the rubber and drilled no further. On the second hole I did not hit metal but I didn't go all the way through either. I think beyond the metal part of the tang the core is fiberglass or something else fairly rigid because the handle seems too stiff to be the same rubber I see on the outside. I sealed both holes with Shoe Goop later. I am hoping the tang was cast with a few approx. 1/2" holes in it. That would mean when they molded the rubber to the tang the rubber would virtually lock to the tang with virtually no chance of the tang sliding out of the rubber. If it was indeed constructed that way then it would take considerable effort or abuse to separate the rubber from the tang. I can't see that ever happening. I've destroyed several hatchets in my time because I work them to the extreme but I believe this one is going to be with me until I either lose it or somebody looking for a good hatchet steals it.
