Q: is this left in the soil? or do you insert it each time you want to check?

A: The stones has to be in the soil permanently. The stones are inserted into the soil, but not all the way, as they need to be visible. Just pour water over the indicator rock and watch it change colour from light to dark. As the soil dries and the rock turns back to light colour, it means that it’s time to water again.
