A: This Door Chime #52-1005 is a "wired" model, and we assume that you are replacing an existing "wired" model. A "wired" model requires electrical power to operate. This requires a "transformer" and low voltage wire. The transformer is usually situated in the basement of a house and is wired to a regular 15amp circuit. The transformer then converts the regular 15 amp circuit to low voltage. From the transformer low voltage wire (Bell wire) is then wired to the Door Chime model. Additional low voltage wire is then wired from the door chime to the 1 or 2 door bell buttons (front door / back door) If you are replacing a wired model you should be able to use the existing low voltage wire and existing transformer located somewhere in the house. Of course the other option is a "battery operated" door chime which does not require a transformer, low voltage Bell wire. The Door Buttons also operate with the use of batteries.
