Victor Electronic Rat Trap

It did catch one mouse, so that worked. But it also had a few false alarms and it is very difficult to clean. The opening is too small for an adult hand to fit in.

We're glad to hear the trap successfully caught a mouse, but we're sorry to hear about the false alarms and the difficulty cleaning it. For the best performance, make sure the trap is placed on a flat, dry surface away from anything that could interfere with the sensing plates, and use only a small amount of bait placed in the bait cup to help prevent false triggers. For cleaning, wear gloves and use a long-handled brush, cotton swab, or damp cloth to reach inside the tunnel without immersing the trap in water. We appreciate your feedback regarding the opening size and will be sure to share it with our product team as we continue improving our products.

Waste of time and money.

I bought my first one an never caught anything for 3 months. It must have not been working. Brought it back for another. My bate was disappearing but no rats.A waste of plastic.

We're sorry to hear the trap did not perform as expected. If the bait is disappearing without a catch, it's often caused by trap placement or bait placement. Position the trap with the entrance against a wall where rat activity has been noticed, and use only a small amount of peanut butter placed at the back of the bait cup so the rat must fully enter the trap to reach it. Also, make sure the batteries are fresh and properly installed.

We appreciate your feedback and will share it with our product team as we continue working to improve our products.

Very effective if used properly.

Electronic traps are the only way to go, ask me how I know. I still use a Ratzapper model or similar and after 6 years, still working like a champ (but definitely eats D batteries). This guy is very similar and uses more wallet friendly AA batteries. The secret is, most of the "mouse sized" models are too small, mice won't enter the very small passageway. But this "rat hotel" they love. Tip: put a bit of peanut butter in a plastic pop bottle cap and slide it all the way to the back, and then turn on. no messy peanut butter cleanup. Also, since you can only zap once, initially at least, if you have an infestation, check often. I was able to get 3/day that way.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Q: Is it large enough to trap and kill a squirrel?

Q: Is this device safe to use in an attic with loose cellulose insulation about? Would it be a fire risk?

2 Answers
  • A: I am not sure. I think it would be fine as I doubt it ever creates much of a spark. I have had a couple of these devices and overall I find them fiddly. This one however did kill a particularly wiley rat that evades us for a long time. If you are are putting it somewhere where you won't check it regularly then you might consider a WiFi connected version. I thought that would be silly until I found a 4-day-dead rat in mine.

Q: Can this trap be used outdoors?

2 Answers
  • A: It is for indoor use. That said, there are a couple of things I have done to use it outdoors. One is to cover the top and sides with a heavy plastic. The other is that I built a covering for it out of plywood. The point is to prevent rain/excessive moisture. Victor does have an outdoor version, but I have not been able to locate a suplier.

Q: I have used this product for rats and mice but it’s not catching this rodent as it’s going through the small holes in the back . Can I cover the holes?

1 Answer
  • Woodstream Team
A: No, we do not recommend covering the holes on the back of the Victor® Electronic Rat Trap. Those openings are part of the trap's designed airflow and operation, and blocking them may affect its performance. If the rodent is entering through the rear openings without triggering the trap, it may be too small for this rat trap. In that case, we recommend using a Victor® Electronic Mouse Trap or another trap designed for smaller rodents, as they are more sensitive to lighter animals.

Q: How do I clean the plates inside the rat trap, when I can't open it

1 Answer
  • Woodstream Team
A: Thank you for contacting us. Please follow the instructions below: Press the power button to turn the trap OFF, then remove the batteries. Open the trap by holding the base of the trap with your left hand and sliding the top backwards with your right hand about one inch. Pull the top away from the base. The kill chamber is now ready for cleaning. Use hydrogen peroxide (nothing above 3% in solution (typical drug-store variant) and an old toothbrush to clean the inside of the chamber. If needed, use a wire brush to remove any corrosion, being careful not to be too vigorous. Allow the trap to air dry completely prior to trap reassembly. To reassemble the trap, hold the base of the trap with your left hand and slide the top into place by pushing forward with your right hand to reconnect the pieces. The trap is ready for use.

Q: How can you test ti ensure your unit is working properly?

1 Answer
  • Woodstream Team
A: When the trap is turned on, the green light should flash once to indicate that it is ready for a catch. We do not have any methods for testing the shock of the trap.

Q: Does this work with mice too? Is it safe to be around pets?

  • Woodstream Team
A: This trap will also catch mice, however, if you only have mice, we recommend using an electronic mousetrap instead.
