Expired Paint kept on shelves

The aerosol Varathane I purchased from Canadian Tire, I came to discover the hard way, was expired and, as a result, destroyed the project I had spent hours creating, as, even after vigorous shaking, came out of the can in clumps. I returned it to the store, only to discover that every can on the shelf was expired by several months. This is either clear staff incompetence, or a sign that the store is run by a dealer who doesn't care about product integrity.

Q: Can this be painted over with an exterior paint?

A: Depends upon the paint. This item is water based, so a water based paint could be applied on top. Just insure that you sand lightly to get good adhesion of new coat. If you use an oil base or solvent base paint on top you will need to use an appropriate primer to prevent a paint reaction. Best to test in a small hidden area to observe if there is a reaction.

Q: Does this varnish need a ventilated area?

A: It's water based, so as a result the volume of VOC's is very low and should be safe to apply indoors. Just be sure there is some amount of ventilation. I wouldn't use it in a confined space.

A: Hi Chris, While our Varathane Diamond Exterior Finish Water-Based has been specifically formulated to provide maximum protection against sun, water, weather, sea spray and chemicals, it is not water proof.

While our Varathane Diamond Wood Finish Exterior can be used over a previously painted surface; We still highly recommend testing the product in an inconspicuous area before beginning. Testing is particularly important when applying over paints or stains as the appearance of these products may change slightly. when a water-based finish is applied.
