    Awesome Bike Rack From Thule

I bought the Thule Parkway 4 bike rack from CT in Aug of 2012 and I have to say it is a fantastic rack even if I had to pay full price. I am so glad I listened to the comments from other CT shoppers like you. Just pick up and observe the product and you will know that it is strong and very well built. It took me 15 minutes to put together and sliding it into my Sienna’s 2 inch hitch was a breeze. Are there fancier racks out there? Of course, but it will come at a significantly greater price. This rack will more than do the job for the 4 or 5 outings per year that I plan on using it. I had contemplated buying another (no-name) rack from another big box store for 1/3 of the regular CT price but the quality doesn’t even come close to this Thule rack (what do you expect). Besides, do you really want to take a chance strapping heavy metal on the back of your vehicle doing over 100 km on a highway? Go with a good quality name brand that you can afford and trust. It will give you peace of mind. The only modification I made was adding a single washer at the joint where it allows you to lower the entire rack. The added washer wasn’t absolutely necessary because the play (sway in the vertical position) was minimal and totally acceptable but with it added on, the rack is a tank and doesn’t move at all and is easy to lift and lower to access the trunk. Please note that the instructions clearly states that raising or lowering the rack should be done “without” bikes on the rack. It would be too heavy and awkward in my own opinion to do this with bikes already loaded on racks of this type. I also ordered another quick release pin from Thule ($7.00) to be used on the 2 horizontal arms that hold up the bikes since the original that comes in the package is a threaded bolt. This will allow me to quickly raise and lower the horizontal arms when not in use. Customer service at Thule was easy and pleasant. I had no problem with ground clearance or between the bike and the rear of the van. If you have bikes with frames that are difficult to load, go for this this double arm model because I was able to hold all 4 bikes (2 adult mountain bikes and 2 children bikes). The 2 arms allowed me to be a little more creative in loading unlike the single arm models which I could only load 2 bikes with simple frames. I have to thank the manager at CT Dufferin and 407 for being extremely helpful. If durability of this product suffers, which I doubt,I will comment at a later date.

    Yes, I recommend this product.

    Questions

    1 - 10 of 15 Questions

Q: Carrying Kids Bikes I have an 11yo and a 9yo, each with BMX bikes. Do these racks accommodate children's bikes? I'm getting mixed stories that not all kid bikes wil fit on these double bar racks. Any advice?

    • A: It will depend on the size of the child's bike and design. No carrier as far as I know will carry "all" bikes. Based on my experience, I found the dual arms provide a little more option in loading than the single arm types. If your bike does not fit you can always return it to CT.

Q: Are the straps replacement available? A couple of the straps of my (Thule) Bicycle carrier are broken.

    • A: Yes, most replacement parts are available. I just ordered spare parts, just in case. Go to Thule's web page and it will list the part number. Call their line which is quick and convenient and pleasant.

Q: This info for this product states it fits "all frames and styles" of bikes. I bought it and it does not accommodate my "female" bike. Why?

    2 Answers
    • A: The "all frames and styles" is not 100% accurate. I assume that you are referring to a bike that does not have a horizontal cross bar (or one close to horizontal) in which the carrier can hold it down properly. You will have to purchase what is called a tension bar that range in price from $30 - $60.00. This bar creates a horizontal bar from the handle bar to the seat post.

Q: Does this product fold down while mounted?

    2 Answers
    • A: I own this rack. Yes it tilts, however the part that supports the bikes does not fold down when not in use. So you can't just leave it mounted when not in use; it is a safely hazard. We just remove it when not using, not a big deal.

    • A: This rack is not likely to fit a vehicle with a rear-mount spare tire carrier. We would suggest Product #040-1036, a SportRack 3-Bike carrier that is designed to work with spare tire carriers.
