Great value-priced winch

Not much to say other than it pulls cable. Solid and dependable so far, no bells and whistles to go wrong. Excellent value, particularly while on sale.

Overhyped Superwinch Brand
Superwinch spends a fortune on promotion and sponsorships to get their brand name out there. They should put more money into their product.
I bought this Superwinch a few years ago from the West Kelowna Can Tire. It replaced an old 1980s vintage Warn 8000. That old winch pulled and pulled and pulled my 7800 pound Excursion out of everything. The old winch burned out 3 alternators and the cooked the alternator wiring harness. But I always got out. It finally blew up on pulling the Excursion sideways in the snow at a dead end on a logging road. But it did get me out. I buried it in my back yard.
The replacement 8500 Superwinch burned out on it's first pull of about 30 feet of a muddy hill. It was not a hard pull. I piled the winch and cable into a shopping cart and took it back to exchange it.
I NEVER pull on a single cable with this winch but ALWAYS double the line on a block. I don't trust this winch. I've only pulled about 5-8 times with it and never feel good when the truck starts to bog.
If you trust the Superwinch brand, buy a far greater capacity Superwinch than what you need. The 8500 might be good for a Wrangler or Suzuki. Anything bigger, go for 10,000 Superwinch. Or buy an 8000 Warn.
No, I do not recommend this product.

Q: Can this run off of a 12 V Car battery?
Is there a way to power these winches without installing them on a vehicle? Like can I just hook it up to a 12 volt battery? How long will a 12 volt battery run the winch? I have a good 12 volt powerpack. Can I hook it up to that?

Q: mount on trailer for boat?
i have a 4000 lb boat and need a winch to mount on the trailer to pull in the boat...can i mount either the 3000 or 8500lb winch to a secure one spot location?
thank you

A: A 3000lb winch is more then sufficent to use to trailer your boat, the floating weight is much less due to bouyancy, I use a hand crank for a 5000lb sailboat.
The winch is not lifting the boat, just pulling from a bouyant position onto a partially submerged trailer, 3000lb winch is lots.
Careful with the powered winch, I would actually recommend a hand winch as you have better control with your expensive boat.
