I received this as a Christmas gift. The first and only time I used it, I sliced two fingers trying to keep the slider in place. It is very poorly constructed and cheap. It's hard to believe who would pay this much for a useless product. The thing that is supposed to keep the food in place does not and with both the food and slider constantly slipping out of place, it's impossible to use. I can slice the food more quickly with a knife! I would not recommend this product.

Q: Can you slice vegetables lengthwise? Can you slice a vegetable like a zucchini lengthwise?

A: Yes. But. The length of anything you cut is limited to the distance from the blade to the end of the top surface. Let's say the carrot is 8" long and the distance from blade to end of top surface is 6" long. Two inches of the carrot will remain uncut with the slice in progress split between top and bottom of the cutting blade. You could lift the mandoline to slice longer carrots but this makes the unit unstable and unsafe. Check out some videos on YouTube, specifically the Borner infomercial to get an idea of the safe way to use a mandoline and therefore which mandolines are inherently unsafe. And always cut directly away from you, never from side to side.
