Too Flimsy for easy loading and unreliable hardware

We've had this cargo box for about two months. It was suppose to make our summer camping trips easier. Our first trip was all low speed and went off without a hitch. Loading the box was a bit of a pain as the weak lid at the back kept bending down into the way. Nothing an improvised prop stick couldn't fix. While we'd expected the lid to be able to hold it's own weight up, it wasn't a big deal. Second trip was at highway speeds. Load was secure at the coffee stop right before the highway. About 60 km later, someone passing us honks and waves at the rack. Pulled over and found our camping trip was lighter some gear and our stroller. The front latch had failed allowing the box to pop open. The 'claw' of the latch was gone. The lid had just flexed right out of the rest of the latch points leaving them undamaged. Using some tie down straps, we were able to get the box lid back down and continue. Went back over our route but we couldn't find the gear or stroller. For the price what we lost, we could have purchased a much better quality unit.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Don’t trust the latches

Got up to highway speed and the top flew open and we had to stop suddenly. We lost a few things on the highway. The key lock unlatched and the locking clips bent and we were paranoid the entire way home.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Working Well at Highway Speeds!

I purchased the SportRack Explorer and some model-specific u-bolts at CTC. At the end of assembly, I discovered the lid was slightly mal-fitted no matter how many times I attempted to move the hinges or the lock bars. Specifically, the passenger side mating edge located between the lock plates was slightly askew. A quick remedy for this is to use some industrial hook and loop product to make the edges re-align. And guess who sells this product. Why, none other than Canadian Tire! This quick application of space-age tape makes all of the edges line up very well, and I am confident of having a great trip to the Okanagan Valley this summer. In conclusion, while the SportRack Explorer cargo box needs a little help with its flexible construction, its design still puts it into a class desired by the budget-minded consumer. Enjoy!

Yes, I recommend this product.

Q: Can this be used without roof racks on a 2009 Ford Edge, using mounting hooks, or another reasonable & safe method? Which hooks would be recommended? Canadian Tire employee recommended the white SportRack hooks, but his system only showed up to the 2008 Ford Edge, so we would like to make sure they're safe before using them. Thanks
