Works! Needs to be Reapplied Frequently

This product does work. According to the instructions, you mix with water and spray on boxwood bush leaves to prevent it from dying of gypsy moth larvae feeding. The hatched larvae eat the leaves and die within two days. I am not sure the product stays on the leaves after thunderstorms. I apply every year, multiple times a year. My boxwoods have been saved compared to neighbours who lost all of their boxwoods.

Seems to be keeping boxwood moths in check. Had already lost a couple of boxwood plants to moth infestation, before finding and utilizing the product.

Boxwood Rescue

We were losing our two mature Boxwood shrubs. Have applied BTK as recommended by a friend and can already see the difference - green leaves reappearing. We will continue to follow directions and keep applying. Fingers crossed. (I will report back)

Q: Is it safe for cherry tomatoes? Do I need to wash the tomatoes before eating?

3 Answers
  • A: The following is from the site of Government of B. C., Canada: Is it safe? Btk has no known toxic effects on humans, other mammals, plants, birds, fish, or honeybees or other beneficial insects, except moth and butterfly caterpillars. After more than 30 years of Btk use and research around the world, Canada, the United States and most other countries where Bt products are currently registered consider it safe and have declared it exempt from pesticide residue tolerances on food crops. Consuming Btk - Btk is used to control pest caterpillars in the production of many food crops. Even organic food growers use this biological insecticide. Because it is not toxic to humans, Btk can be used right up to the time of harvest. Nevertheless, any sprayed fruits or vegetables should be washed before they are eaten.

Q: Does this work on carpet beetle larvae?

3 Answers
  • A: No, look up strains of bacteria you need, or 'predator insects' like types of nematodes for the specific species you need to reduce. BTK only kills specific species of caterpillars. There are other strains for other insect control.

  • A: I don’t recall what the package said, but I’d suggest you don’t want it to rain immediately after application. 24 hours+ for sure.

Q: Since the LDD exists as a Caterpillar for about four weeks and six moults and consumes the foliage of just about everything how can you say this product is not designed to kill them?

2 Answers
  • A: The trick is to spray BTK on leaves before the caterpillars emerge so the young, small caterpillars eat leaves when they are small. It is not effective on larger caterpillars.  When you do that you will see parts of leaves consumed but these young caterpillars will die.

Q: Will this product work on potato bugs?

2 Answers
  • A: As far as I know no, since it works only on caterpillar digestive systems--It is a highly specific natural insecticide. Potato beetles do not have this life stage and attack potatoes as adults. Check out the following link https://www.thespruce.com/controlling-colorado-potato-beetle-organic-methods-2539840
