Questions

1 - 3 of 3 Questions

Q: For household applications, can this primer be covered over with latex paint?

1 Answer
  • A: Rust Primer is a solvent-based alkyd paint. There may be compatibility/adhesion issues if a water-based (latex) paint is applied over top.

Q: Do I need to sand where the rust on my car meets the paint still adhering to the metal without rust?

1 Answer
  • A: Yes, all rust must be exposed to avoid undercutting of the existing coating; best practice is to remove as much loose rust as possible.

Q: Painting old truck I have an old 98 Chev truck that has a good body with little rust but is an ugly yellow. I don't want to pay for a new paint job as it is only used for grunge jobs so can I use this product simply to change the colour?

1 Answer
  • A: The answer would be yes…the Red Oxide Primer be used to paint over rusted areas on the 98 Chev Truck. Just ensure that any loose rust is removed and the surface is free of dirt, oil, grease, etc. While the truck is currently “an ugly yellow”, the red oxide primer is a flat reddish-brown colour. This is definitely quite a difference in colour so, if you want to make the repaired areas a little less noticeable, you may wish to top coat the primer with a colour closer to the “ugly yellow”. If this is going to be done, you should wait for at least 24 hours (preferably 48 hours) after the primer is applied before spraying the top coat to ensure that the red oxide primer is through cured.
