    Long drying time!!!

Partially my fault, didn’t read drying time printed on can. I wanted to paint the hub portions of my rotor, however, the drying time was 2-3 days which was totally impractical for my application.

Q: I need help please. Can I apply this product on top of body filler ? Can I also apply this product on rest of hood as primer, before painting ? Thanks

    1 Answer
    • A: This product can be applied on top of filler but is not designed to be. It is designed to be used in spot repair areas where a rust converter is not practical for use to seal and neutralize rusted areas. If the area is accessible and not near finished paint areas we would recommend treating the area manually (grinder/sanding) and following with Rust Converter ( #047-7964-4 or #047-7965-2). After which, wipe the surface well with water, allow to dry before applying the filler. Ensure the filler has fully dried and is clean of any sanding dust before applying a sealer primer.

Q: Does this spray on white or clear?

    1 Answer
    • A: I believe this may be a mixing issue. If mixed properly, the applied coating will appear light grey. This product contains lots of filler / pigment which settles out and must be mixed thoroughly to a uniform consistency before spraying. The mixing is accomplished by slowly inverting can upside down, then returning to an upright position – no more than 60 times/minute. If you invert too fast or just shake the can, then no mixing occurs! I mix until the ball is moving freely, then mix for an additional 2-3 minutes. If improperly mixed, then coating with very little filler/pigment will be applied and will appear light, even off-white. It may not even cure properly unless properly mixed.

Q: 2005 jeep t.j 6 cyl. if I need to use small amount body filler do I apply rust check rust killer before or after? can rust killer be applied on top of body filler?

    1 Answer
    • A: We do not recommend using polyester type fillers over Rust Killer primer. The Body Filler is designed to fill and level a panel and must be used on clean untreated metal for proper adhesion. If Rust Killer is to be used in such a situation, it would be done after any filling requirement has been satisfied..

Q: So if I spray this over rust will it prevent the rust from spreading or will it just cover it up?

    1 Answer
    • A: Most of the loose rust should first be removed. On areas with very little rust, the coating will cure to an off-white film appearance. On highly rusted spots you may see brownish spots/discoloration due to the conversion process. Just let it fully cure before top-coating.

    1 Answer
    • A: Rust Killer is an alkyd based coating and should not be sprayed over brake pads. This may affect brake performance.

Q: Why don't Rust Check products list the time between coats like all other products do. There were no instructions so I used the times for Dupli-Color Perfect Match paint. It is bad enough that the instructions are in microprint but they should be complete.

    1 Answer
    • A: • Usually one coat is sufficient to cover the substrate with a dry time of 2 to 3 days • If an additional coat of Rust Killer applied, then the minimum dry between coats should be 16 hours to 2 days • When two coats of Rust Killer are applied, the required dry time before top-coating will increase to 5 – 7 days • These dry times will increase if there is poor ventilation, low temperatures or if the applied coating is too thick.
