Works excellent

Used to thaw water lines and plumbing and to prevent them from freezing again. By the time I applied heat trace and insulated pipes, plugged in cord and walked back upstairs everything was already thawed and working again as it should. Have had extremely cold days since then and have had no issues at all with frozen lines or plumbing. Cost effective for sure

Q: Can you use this outdoors on a PVC outflow pipe for a sump pump -- ie a drain pipe?  Wrap it with insulation?  Can it be on constantly since it is below freezing most of the time for a couple of months? How much power does it consume?

  • A: It works fine with PVC. With a Sump application care must be taken that outflow, actually has a place to-go-to (flow volume/direction). Above-ground/exposed PVC, should be insulation wrapped to increase efficiency. Electrical tape is handiest to attach the Heat-line then apply insulation. Foam pipe insulation is really handy if the diameter of sump hose will allow. Again electrical tape or zip-ties work well. The product is designed to consume energy (watts/per foot) per the Specs. on "Product Details", keeping the entire cord length just above freezing, consistently. The products' thermostat (self-regulating) will self-recognize "foot-to-foot" installation conditions and supply variable power to colder pipe (this foot, but not as much the foot next to it) as needed. This IS a proven technology. I've used it for hose-bibs to 400' lake-water intakes to roofing and drainage for 25 years. Your total Electrical consumption really is efficient and only depends on how much sump-hose is above-ground. In my Use, 6 meters, 1/2 below grade (above/below/above/below again), "on" 24/7 all winter, is hourly consuming a little more than a 75 watt light bulb. Hope this helps.

Q: I can’t find any spec that shows how long this cable is. The only spec about length says “assembled length is 9.75 inches”, which doesn’t make any sense

2 Answers
  • A: I believe the cable length and wattage rating are usually on a white label that is stuck onto the plastic packaging - maybe the one you looked at has the label missing? Correct 9.75 inches does not make sense. It would be more likely be 6, 12, 15, 20, 30 feet.

Q: could this electric water pipe heater be used on a copper pipe that is 5 to 8 inches below ground

2 Answers
  • A: Our AHB Heating Cables are designed exclusively for water-filled metal or plastic supply pipes that are above ground and must remain dry at all times. For applications involving water pipes located a few inches below ground, we recommend using our wet-rated products, such as the SR Trace and PSR Heating Cables. It’s crucial that the underground pipe is accessible to ensure proper installation of the cable according to the instructions, and it should be insulated with waterproof insulation as well.

Q: how do I know what wattage to choose? We will use this for our home's main water line in the basement .

2 Answers
  • A: The AHB heating cable is rated at 7 watts per foot, 120 Vac. Therefore, this will depend on the length of your plastic/metal waterline. The cables come in pre-terminated lengths that range from 3 feet to 80 feet. Do take note that the cable should only be installed in a straight manner. Pipes must be at least 3 feet long and at least ⅜” and no more than 1 ½” in diameter and used only in appropriate locations based on the manual. As for your reference, kindly see the links below for additional information regarding our EasyHeat AHB heating cable. Catalog: AHB Cable | EasyHeat Product Manual: AHB Cable | EasyHeat If you have additional technical questions, please contact us using our toll-free number 800 621 1506 then choose option 2.
