Good starter kit

Good starter kit. The reason for not giving it 5 stars is that this was replacing an old hub and it took some time to transfer my existing lights to the new hub. I still have not resolved all the issues with the transfer from the old hub, but the new hub works well and the bulbs that came with it connected easily.

Easy to install. Convenient. Can be programmed to turn on/off. Way easier than a timer device that has to be plugged into the wall and reset when the time changes spring and fall. Lights can can be set to come on at 100% brightness or a lower light setting. Quite nifty.

Performance of HUE starter kit

This smart system is a great help in my house. I was able to put smart bulbs in my dining room chandelier and control them with the Hue or Alexa app. I had LED lights previously but could not dim them since my dimmer is not LeD compatible. Now that is not a problem.

Q: Does this device need to be connected to the internet 100% of the time to work or can it be programmed to function on it's own without an internet connection?

1 Answer

A: The answer is no it does not. The bridge works as a standalone device and does not require the internet to work. The app on your phone works with your network and not over the internet, the same goes for all the bulbs too which uses the ZigBee Light Link (ZLL) protocol. Although the internet is not required, the bridge must be connected to a wired router, this is because the hue bridge itself is not wireless, and so uses your router it can connect to your network be it in the internet or not.
