I bought 2 as we have 2 dogs. I bought them specifically because of the retractable feature, hoping it would lessen the two of them from getting tangled up in each other. Only used them the once, at an outdoor family function we went too. My dogs are 13 yr old brothers. One dog did ok, and it helped as expected. But the other thought he was held on a short chain. He couldn’t figure out he could just pull, and the cord would come out, so he ended up lying right beside the unit. Also, the supplied cap used to protect the top of the unit so you can pound the stake into the ground, is going to get lost. It needs to be tethered to the unit to prevent loss.

Was not effective. Ended up tying it around a tree as the spike didn’t work. We were unable to lock the retracted line so our dog hated it.
