Not Gasoline or Shop Fluid Resistant as Described

I used Permatex Form-A-Gasket 2 Sealant as directed to install the gasket between the carburetor and the fuel tank of a Briggs and Stratton horizontal shaft engine. This was the only gasket product that Canadian Tire carries that's labelled as "Resists Gasoline and other Shop Fluids". I let the assembly sit for 48 hours before adding fuel and starting the engine. A few minutes into its operation, fuel began seeping from the joint. After disassembling the fuel tank from the carburetor, I noticed that some of the gasket sealant had dissolved and that semi-rigid bits of the sealant were at the bottom of the fuel tank and the integrated carburetor bowl as well as stuck to the intake screens of the carburetor pick-up tubes. When I poured out the gasoline from the tank, it had visible dark-grey sediment in it from the gasket sealant. Some of the gasket sealant on the gasket and mating surfaces was semi-rigid and difficult to remove while the rest was easily wiped away with carburetor cleaner. Not very gasoline and shop fluid resistant! I reached out to Permitted and their response was: "A better product to seal the carburetor gasket would be 85420 Permashield fuel resistant gasket dressing and flange sealant". Knowing that their recommended product is not available in retail stores in Ontario, you would think that Permatex would send out a tube of the Permashield as a good-will gesture to replace their failed gasket sealant. I'll try Canadian Tire to see what they offer as an exchange.

Hello Kijor, we are sorry to hear that Permatex Form-A-Gasket Sealant 2BR to not perform as expected. In reading the review, it is unclear whether Form-A-Gasket Sealant was applied to a paper, cork or rubber gasket. For this application, Form-A-Gasket Sealant is not designed to be used as the gasket. It is designed to be applied onto a physical paper, cork or rubber gasket. The sealant then helps seal the physical gasket. Again, we are sorry that Permatex Form-A-Gasket Sealant did not meet your expectations.

    Permatex fuel resistance

I used Permatex 2BR non-hardening on a gas tank seal on a Mazda 626 1988. It claims to be gasoline resistant. It is not. Unfortunately I installed a fuel pump assembly with a new gasket and the Permatex on the seal and flange. Because I came across a review (too late) I have not started use of the vehicle. I tested some sealer, after it dried overnight, in some gasoline. I immersed it in closed container, shook vigorously, and it started dissolving in the fuel. I have to remove the fuel pump, clean off the Permatex 2BR. Fortunately I found the review. Terrible product. This stuff could destroy fuel injectors and worse.

No, I do not recommend this product.
