    It's called a 'chemical toilet' on the CT website, but it was difficult to get any straight answer about what kind of chemicals it needed. The actual product doesn't call itself a 'chemical toilet'. Turns out it's basically a bucket with a seat. Ended up returning it, once I realized that was all it was. Don't need to pay that much for a bucket.

    No, I do not recommend this product.

    Q: How does this work? It's called a chemical toilet, so what chemicals do I need to buy, to use it?

    • A: A chemical toilet is simply a pail sitting inside another exterior bucket. They sell special double lined waste bags and little chemical pucks for these toilets, but most people just use regular small garbage bags and a scoop of kitty litter.

    Q: Maybe an obvious question .. but Would this be good to use in the house for someone who lives alone, is going in for knee surgery, and whose bathroom is on the second floor? The hospital says it will be a few weeks before I will be able to navigate the stairs.

    • A: I think if you had it in a place where it wouldn't tip over (since you will likely be sore and unbalanced) it could work. The waste could be flushed down the toilet by whomever is looking after you.

    Q: How do you clean it? So....does "everything" just sit in the pail? Are there any special cleaners that you need to use to sanitize it? Hmmmmmm....

    • A: There are actually these really handy bags you can get for it called double duty .. They have gel crystals that absorb everything .. and when your done it folds up into a double sealed ziplock for easy disposal.

    • A: I usually empty the bags down the outhouse when we get to a camping station, then re-seal the bag and throw it out. You can throw them directly in the garbage as the gel solidifies most of the waste, but I prefer not to.

    Q: Packets that come with Toilet They are mixed with approx 1 gallon of water however I do not see these for sale at Canadian Tire. Alternatives? I see some people mention something called double duty but is this a product sold by CT?

    • A: Have you thought about using kitty litter in a doubled up kitchen catcher bag in the bucket prior to use? Works great when you cannot empty right away. Makes disposal more discreet.

    Q: Maximum weight of user, content disposal What is the maximum weight that it can handle? Will it be suitable for an elderly person? Where do you buy bags for it so you can just pick up the bag and throw it away, instead of having to wash it?

    • A: It's very sturdy and is excellent for elderly people and very large people too. It does not have a back so any sized rear end will fit. Speaking from experience it holds a lot of weight. It's clean to use - the bucket is large so no splashing. I only use it for #1 so the cleaning is a breeze. Bleach, soap and water (wearing disposable gloves if you wish) and air dry. I don't use bags otherwise, if I did I wouldn't be able to dump down an outhouse each morning. Bags may be a good idea though if there are flush toilets and you can't dump too much TP... and to eliminate cleanup. I think Glad Kitchen Catchers would do the trick.

    • A: Human waste sitting around is going to smell, you want the kind that flushes. The flush kind contains the waste in a seal compartment underneath.
