Nice design, good fit, needed reinforcement for the job

I replaced the whole turbo-back exhaust in my Sprinter and was able to remove every sensor with a wrench, with the exception of the upper-most oxygen sensor. Even with a rag over the wrench I ended up injuring my fingers pulling on it. Sadly, I didn't have a cheater bar to fit over such a large wrench, and rather than buy one I decided to opt for the "correct" solution, this socket. The socket looks good and feels substantial in the hand. It fit over the sensor wire and slid down over the sensor and snug onto the sensor nut. I like that you have the option to use a 3/8 drive or a large wrench (it's probably 1", but my biggest wrench is 15/16 and it's not quite big enough). I used a 36" breaker bar with a 1/2" to 3/8" adapter. To this point everything was coming up roses. The trouble began when I imparted substantial torque to the socket via the breaker bar. Rather than break loose the stubborn sensor, the socket simply expanded and rotate over the static sensor, despite not lifting away from the exhaust where it was mounted. Desperate, I found three appropriately sized hose clamps and fastened the first at the low extremity of the socket, the second just above it and the third above that. Had I found a fourth it would have gone over top the first. I didn't think this would work and I expected the clamps to deform and the socket to again expand as I torqued it, but to my surprise the hack was a success and the sensor finally let go of the exhaust down pipe. So ultimately this socket worked for its intended purpose, but only with some extra help. How much torque did it take to remove the sensor? I don't know. How much to deform the socket? Less is all I can say for sure. Would a more expensive socket stand up better to the task and remove such a sensor unassisted? I don't know, but I'd like to think so. I'm not a materials scientist, but I'm sure this tool isn't the hardest one on the planet. Hopefully my experience will be helpful to someone who finds him or herself in a similar predicament.

Questions

1 - 4 of 4 Questions

Q: 7/8th in is not the same as 22mm, I have a slotted 7/8 that was way too loose and started stripping my O2 sensor. Please get an actual 22mm socket . This is Canada after all so why so hard to get an accurate 22mm slotted socket?
