    Drains Batteries

Tried using this for the summer, worked okay so I kept it on. On darker days, the unit appears to be unregulated and drains the battery instead of charging it. I had a brand new ACDelco battery and it nearly ruined it.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Q: How long does it take this to charge a car battery to full?

    3 Answers
    • A: Given its a 5 watt output charger(assuming full sun and perfect angle, likely it doesn't actually reach 5 watts because most products overestimate their capacity) and car batteries are 500-1200 watts typically, 1200 is usually bigger cars or trucks though, it would take a minimum of 100 hours of 100% output to charge a 500watt car battery. Car batteries drain about 5% a week so you'd have to take that into consideration too ontop of radio/general car systems that also drain it while sitting unused. If your battery is completely dead I would expect at minimum 2 weeks in the longer summer days, maybe 6 weeks in the shorter and weaker sun winter days. Buy a trickle charger if you need to charge a dead battery, that will only take a day or 2 tops. This is more of a maintainer for an almost full battery.

Q: Will this prevent overcharging a battery? Do I need to buy a solar charger regulator to alleviate the worries of damaging a battery from over charging? Will be left for a year without monitoring

    2 Answers
    • A: The charger does not have a regulator. When attached to a voltmeter in direct sunlight the output is circa 22V but the amperage is low enough not to damage the electronics of you car as most alternators output at 14.6V; the max output as mentioned only occurs in direct sunlight and any angling of the panel significantly reduces output voltage. After 1 week of being left attached to a vehicle the accumulation of dust and dew is enough to also require the panel be cleaned in order to be above 12-14V output. So technically under perfect conditions you could overcharge a battery if the sun was out the whole 24 hours and the panel tracked the position in the sky for direct photovoltaic operation. The reality is you would need to go clean the panel every month or sooner to get enough from it to maintain your battery.

Q: Is it waterproof? As in, can I mount it outside where it will get rained on?

    • A: Yes. Mine is on my boat. Gets rained on all the time and keeps the battery charged and running the auto bildge pump.

Q: Hi - will this provide charge to my car's battery by simply just plugging it into my dashboard 12V socket (aka cigarette lighter port, lol) or is there additional installation required if I dont want to be popping my hood every day to connect it.

    2 Answers
    • A: Just plug this in and you are good to charge. No you do not have to check it out everyday. Just remember to unplug this before driving though and re-plug on arrival home again. We have two chargers and they work well - happy with them for sure.

Q: Can I leave this charger on my car's battery for 6 months? (Say, over the winter months?)

    2 Answers
    • A: We leave this charger connected to a vehicle that is rarely used with no ill effects. In fact, the fuel pump went on it 2 years ago & it hasn't run but still will turn over quickly if you try it.
