Not very pleased with this. It's very slow to read temperatures, You have to hold the trigger for awhile before it settles on a reading, I thought it would be an instant read, It doesn't seem very accurate. Not worth 70 bucks. Save your money,

Q: Next winter I'd like to have a way to detect where the hot air escaping the cold air is getting in. For example to be able to point it at a door to see which gaps are causing the most heat loss. Is this the tool for that?

A: Buy the infrared thermal imaging unit for that. It works outside or indoors and gives you an image around a door or window where heat loss occurs. The thermal image unit also detects water leaks in a wall or ceiling, making this a popular tool for plumbers and hvac technicians. It's more expensive but worth the price.

Q: So what the heck is the Applicable Emissivity for cast iron/steel??? The manual shows a bunch of different materials (never had the need to measure the temperature of a "soap bubble", hmm...LOL), but the most basic one, that being metal/steel is missing!

A: It does have a dew point indicator. You can set it for the type of surface material and it will tell you what the dew point is. Works well for a relatively inexpensive unit.
