Useless Product

These gouges are a very poor quality. They are not made of HSS (high speed steel). A good wood lathe gouge is made of HSS or carbide and can withstand high speed turning of hard wood. Just think before you buy!!! Would you want your child play hockey with a $40. pair of skates? Common sense should tell you that the answer is NO! If you think these chisels are ok for a beginner, you are wrong again. They will give you a bad experience and you would conclude that "Woodturning is not for me". Just like your child with the cheap skates, you will quit.

Everything's just Okay

These are cheap chisels. And you get what you pay for. That's all you really need to know.
The price is a pro. If you're looking for a set to learn with or to turn at low speeds on soft wood or just an occasional hobby set then these keep you from sinking hundreds of dollars into something that will just sit in your garage.
They are not good at high speeds and dull quickly. If they do dull they catch easily and then they bend easily. The handles also fall off. That's when you're using them fairly regularly. Although I was using them on soft wood.
If you're interested in learning, they will be decent enough to let you get the hang of things before you invest in a more expensive set. There's a good range of tools in there so as a practice set to get used to what each chisel does they are worth the money - on sale.

I purchased these chisels and found that they were too soft to keep an edge. I went out and bought a more expensive set. I should have paid more in the first place - my mistake.

Good starter chisel set

This set of turning chisels offers a good selection of tools for the price. They work very well with a smaller lathe (I bought mine to use with the MasterCraft mini lathe). The price is reasonable, too - some chisel sets cost 2 or 3 times as much. They need a final sharpening and honing before use, but that applies to all chisels in general. For people who are just starting out in the art of wood turning, this is a great set for beginners.

Q: Chisel types in set, steel type and tool length? Which types of chisels are in this set (roughing gauge, skew chisel, etc) and which size are they (skew 1/2" for example). What is the type of steel: Carbon steel or(HSS)? What is the length of the handles and total tool length?

A: The types and sizes of the chisels is listed under our specifications. The blades are forged steel. The total length of the wood chisels is 400mm, and the handle length is 280mm.
